Flying the Baja

I have flown the Baja twice in the last two years both times clearing customs at San Felipe. One comment on San Felipe Int. that I would like to give a heads up is that pilots fly go there mostly for fuel and to clear customs and have few alternatives. The problem is the potential sever cross winds out of the east for TW planes and the tower will bring you straight in on the down wind unless you say hell no. I believe the nearest fuel is south at Loreto Int. which is a long way for a GA aircraft. Eighty miles south with multiple runway options but no fuel is "Alfonsina's" a fun place to hang out for a few days. I found no problems with the Federals except that they look about 15 and the guns seem too heavy for them to carry. I also have not notice a lot of complaints on security from the Baja Bush Pilots..Probably safer flying with a group of planes and also more fun....Garv

The cross runway that you talk about at Alfonsina's is accually Rancho Grande. Alfonsina's is on a sand spit and can be uderwater at high tide during a new and full moon.

Rancho Grande has a cross runway and if you taxi to the west end of the ruway, get out and move the rocks you can taxi north down down the interstate (term used loosly) about 100yards and fill up at the local gas station. Have done it several times in the 182.

We can talk a little about Mexico flying but if you get serious about it, join Baja Bush Pilots and use their forum for questions. There is a form for each airport and you should read all post on each airport you plan on landing at.

We could do a BCP fly in to Punta Sanfrancisquito next fall if you guys want, it is awsom.

That sounds like fun, Tim. I flew into SanFrancisquito to re-po a sailboat for delivery back to the US. The cantina right on the beach was quite refreshing after the flight from Tijuana. That was over 20 years ago...but it still sounds like fun. I've still got some stories from that trip!

Tim..The purpose of the email was a heads up on the cross winds at San Feliepe. One of the first alternatives to the cross winds is the multiple run ways at Gonzaga Bay or Alfonsina's Resort. I do belong to the Baja Pilots..Thanks for your informative input....Garv
