MGL EFIs and upgrades

I am looking at an airplane that has an MGL EFIs and also has a mount for an iPad mini. I have never used nor really investigated the MGL units and am wondering if anyone has any reviews on them.

SInce I am not an iPad person I am considering removing the mount and maybe getting another MGL with a larger screen ala glass panel. The plane is currently set up to use the table and EFIs with only a couple of other steam gauges: AS, VSI, Alt, and Turn and bank. I suppose it really doesn't need anything else but the 8.5" or 10.4" would be a little easier for my aging eyes to see. It would also be able to tie into what is already there. The closest I have h\ever been to any glass stuff is an AvMap GPS. I normally look out the window. ;) Since this will (hopefully) be the last airplane I buy, I would like it set up nicely. Heck, I might even add an auto pilot in the future. Nah.....

What is the opinion on MGL stuff?

No experience but I’ve heard good things.

I’ve personally been waffling over whether or not to drop the money on their Xtreme EMS.

No experience with MGL EFIS gear. When I was studying things out I determined that their equipment is very user adjustable, meaning that you have lots of options during setup but it requires a lot more effort and understanding of how the systems works. I wanted something a little more plug and play. But I could be totally wrong.

I do have their new V16 com radio and will be adding their N16 nav radio. Awesome radio with great customer service straight from the owner.

I have seen quite a few RV's with MGL units. Not sure if it is due to the point price point or because it's a nice unit. Maybe I'll take a look at the VANs RV forum and see what they have to say.

Re: MGL EFIs and upgrades

My experimental which I consider to be a bastardized Kitfox with metric hardware, a Rotax 912iS fuel injected engine, and Oratex fabric has MGL avionics - it has Hungarian roots with Italian wheels and various European parts to make maintenance interesting.

MGL customer support is superb.

After I took delivery, I installed an accurate altimeter and set up my iPhone with Velcro on the panel for GPS tracking and ADS-b plane avoidance.

The MGL EFIS display is nice but busy. It can be customized a plethora of ways but I am content to rely on it for airspeed and VSI.

I find it painful to set local time (it seems to wait until next flight) and setting anything but direct to is so much easier with foreflight on the iPhone (this is probably user stupidity)
