Michigan upper peninsula

Just joined the RAF and am excited about the North Fox Island runway. Plan to head up there as soon as possible. But I’ve been looking and I’m starting to wonder if there are any beaches in the UP that folks are landing on. Looks like some likely spots east of Grand Marais and around Whitefish Point. Does anyone know the legality of these areas? And more importantly is anyone already bouncing around that part of the world with some real world knowledge and advice? Feeling a little left out of the backcountry scene here in Central Wisconsin lol!

Rich Castle 660-415-6998. He wrote the Forward for my "Contact Flying" paperback and does some flying and fishing in that area.

Re: Michigan upper peninsula

The RAF has the Two Hearted Airstrip coming online as well. I went there with my son last year. It is a nice spot with about a 2 minute walk to Lake Superior.

Rob Aho lives somewhere in the Keweenaw Peninsula. I'm not sure if he is still on this site, but I follow him on IG. He posts a bunch of pics of landing some nice looking places. He is likely a great reference.

Thanks TW. I’ll google him and see what comes up. I had heard two hearted was next but really not even sure where it’s at. I do know where the two hearted river empties into superior so I’m assuming in the area just east of Grand Marais?

You got it. Right where the Two Hearted dumps into the lake. The Two Hearted River State Forest Campground and the Rainbow Lodge are right there too.

Are you Mike L’s friend and do you guys spray together?

Yep Mike and I work together. I did find two hearted on ForeFlight last night. Visited with the Michigan RAF rep via email also. Sounds like the strip is gonna open May 15! He also gave me a couple contacts for the Wisconsin rep and the fella that lives in Chassel so I think we are set up for a trip up that way in May. Let me or Mike know if you are interested in making it a group effort.

Interested for sure. Mike has all of my contact info so it might just be easiest to get it from him. Also, the WI rep for the RAF is a good friend and has the hangar right next to me. Glad to help if you need anything but it sounds like you are dialed in.
