Minchumina, Alaska Rock Skipping 7/25/15

The annual Rock Skipping contest and potluck is happening this Saturday at Lake Minchumina, Alaska. Potluck to start at 1:00, and rock skipping to start at 3:00. The only rule is No Imported Rocks!

This year might be a little different than other years. The regular event organizer is away, and there's no t-shirts made up. There's also a couple of Hotshot crews camped out at the runway, due to the recent fire activity in the area.

Fortunately the fires are effectively out, and the air is clear. The normal ramp on 03/21 is currently used as staging for the Hotshot crews, so probably best to taxi down the closed crosswind runway to the end, which is nearest the event anyway. As of last week the grass was not too tall for your typical bush bird. Watch out for crews and tents along the lake-side of the runway though. Also be alert to helicopter and fixed wing ops relating to the firefighters.

Hope some of you Interior types can make it,

DP,

Have a great time. This was a family highlight from the summer of 13. My son was the junior division champ. The folks there couldn't have been more accommodating.

Made it over for rock skipping yesterday- had an awesome time. About 15 residents and summer residents, five visiting aircraft, and approx 50 wildland firefighters turned out. My kids did well in the junior division. I placed way behind a bunch of brawny, mutton-chopped, smoky-smelling dudes with names like Taser, Hambone, and Grim Reaper. The folks at Minchumina sure are excellent hosts. Many thanks to everyone who made it possible. See you next year!

p.s. Made it home ahead of the thunderstorms and got to meet PAMR MX and his delightful family. Nice end to a great day.

BCP Hat in the wild. Nice! Glad you had a good time. Couldn't agree more about the hospitality of the folks at Lake Minchumina. Glad the involved the fire crew.
