Modified "Infant" Headset

I was looking for a headset for my kid who is not quite a year old. There are plenty of "youth" headsets, but all they do is take adult sized ear-cups and put them on a smaller band. That's great when the kids are bit older, but the cups are too big for the little guy. He has a pair of Banz infant noise protection headsets that he loves. He likes to carry them around the house, and he loves wearing them - he probably is tired of my voice so wearing the hearing protection saves him the pain of hearing me tell him how cute he is. Anyway... I had an old set of Avcom headsets so I hacked into them. The reason I chose the Avcoms is because I had them, and they have a detachable cord. I took out the guts of the Avcoms and removed the wires associated with the mic - all I wanted was for him to be able to hear us through the intercom. He doesn't have a lot to say yet, so we don't really need to hear him. Plus, if he wants us to hear him we can - right through the noise of the plane and the noise-cancelling Bose headsets we have!

It took some doing because the Banz headset cups are smaller, but I was able to fit the wires, the volume control knobs and the speakers into them in a way that looks pretty stock. I had to do some soldering to shorten the wire that connects the two cups, as well as to get the plug wire connection placed into one of the cups. After stuffing the foam back in, they look pretty good! I like that the plug wire comes off - that way when he falls asleep (which he almost always does) I can just pull the cord off and he won't hear us anymore. Also, he has pretty busy hands, so sometimes it's nice to detach the cord so he doesn't pull on it.

Anyway, until someone makes smaller cupped headsets for little kids, this was a cheap solution that seams to work pretty well.

That's awesome! How much to modify my set? Haha.
I may have to give this a try for my little guy.

Ha ha - no. You don't want me to modify anything, it's not work anyone should be proud of...

Lochton loves being able to hear us, especially during take-off. Here he is the first time we tried them - notice the wonder (not fear, that is a face of wonder, right?) as I talk him through take-off:

And what he looks like most of the time while flying:

That's awesome, Allen. Thanks for sharing. I think we've all been a little underwhelmed with headset offerings for kids.

What is that connector you used at the cup? Looks like XLR but smaller?

Re: Modified "Infant" Headset

Ill take a set as well! The child headsets are just adults with shorter mic booms.
