I was looking for a headset for my kid who is not quite a year old. There are plenty of "youth" headsets, but all they do is take adult sized ear-cups and put them on a smaller band. That's great when the kids are bit older, but the cups are too big for the little guy. He has a pair of Banz infant noise protection headsets that he loves. He likes to carry them around the house, and he loves wearing them - he probably is tired of my voice so wearing the hearing protection saves him the pain of hearing me tell him how cute he is. Anyway... I had an old set of Avcom headsets so I hacked into them. The reason I chose the Avcoms is because I had them, and they have a detachable cord. I took out the guts of the Avcoms and removed the wires associated with the mic - all I wanted was for him to be able to hear us through the intercom. He doesn't have a lot to say yet, so we don't really need to hear him. Plus, if he wants us to hear him we can - right through the noise of the plane and the noise-cancelling Bose headsets we have!
It took some doing because the Banz headset cups are smaller, but I was able to fit the wires, the volume control knobs and the speakers into them in a way that looks pretty stock. I had to do some soldering to shorten the wire that connects the two cups, as well as to get the plug wire connection placed into one of the cups. After stuffing the foam back in, they look pretty good! I like that the plug wire comes off - that way when he falls asleep (which he almost always does) I can just pull the cord off and he won't hear us anymore. Also, he has pretty busy hands, so sometimes it's nice to detach the cord so he doesn't pull on it.
Anyway, until someone makes smaller cupped headsets for little kids, this was a cheap solution that seams to work pretty well.
