Moose Creek

Hello to all....great forum.. Going to ID later this year. Wondering if any of you folks had experience at Moose Creek. Read all the books, info etc., but would like to hear from a local about the best specific arrival/ departure routes and overall level of insanity. Thanks a bunch.

Moose creek is very cool. I was there last year and wished that I had camped there. It is a couple hindered yard walk to the creek from the end of the runway, very cool.......Ron

We flew into Moose Creek last summer. We landed and departed on 19. It's just slightly downhill and affords a nice long and stable final approach and landing in calm wind conditions. I like it better than the approach and turn to short final over the river, but recommend looking the field over good from overhead and do what's comfortable for you or as recommended in Fly Idaho. Lots of options here depending on conditions, but always preferable in the canyons when the conditions are relatively calm. Landing on 4 and takeoff on 22 also looks like a no brainer. Not much insanity here, plenty of room for Gooney Birds.

It's a very nice place to hang out for a few days or just for the morning. The Forest Service facilities are historic and a must see.

Moose Creek camping

Moose Creek is a very beautiful area, with good runways & great camping areas with outhouses & picnic tables.
The runways have very tall trees lining each side which would likely make for some testy wind shear if there was much wind, so keep on your toes, for sure. The taxi areas have some dips in 'em, so send someone on foot, if the grass is tall, if you have low prop clearance, and you're unsure of the terrain.
Great swimming holes down on the river, and a nice steep hike up to a lookout tower, that's staffed by a hermit that otherwise drives a taxicab in NYC!
Happy trails, Berk
