Moose creek mishap

Called my old partner Curtis at Elk City to tell him when I'm coming up for my annual trip... Curt said a guy in a cherokee 140 was going into Moose creek last week and just as he was about to touch down on the long runway a deer ran out in front of him.. He pulled up sharply, stalled and went in and flipped over on his back. Rangers aren't at the station yet and he was fortunate a packer was there hunting mountain lion... Packer put the guy up fed him and got him out... plane is still on the runway at Moose...pilot not hurt...Pilot asked Curt if he would haul out his plane in parts in Curts Moose... :?

Re: Moose creek mishap

I was taking off of Moose Creek a few years ago and a white tail doe ran out and crossed the runway about 100yrds in front of me! Fortunately I had enough airspeed to fly over her as she was still on the run! I think it was that same year that the state police came through on foot with pack horses checking peoples bear tags and said that they jumped a cougar just across from where we were camped. Lots of elk and rattle snakes too! That's a beautiful area. I'm glad the guys alright. If he would have just hit the deer at least they would have had venison to eat on the way out! :D

Hello Iceman,
The airplane on it's back at Moose Creek is a Piper Pacer. According to the pilot there were deer on the runway however this was not the causal factor. There was also a Cessna 185 recently balled up on the Salmon River too. Looks like "ground loop" season is off to a early start this year.

Re: Moose creek mishap

Wonder if that is the same 185 I saw on the FAA accident reports several days ago. Reported to have hit a rock on a private strip near Boise. Salmon River is a ways from Boise.

Re: Moose creek mishap

Sorta off topic -

White tail deer live in Idaho at the lower elevations and along the snake river in the river bottoms. I have never hunted them but I think you can get two tags for some areas. I don't care for them, I think they have less brains than the Muleys (and the Muleys you never trust either)

Sad to hear of guys cracking up their ships. Damn it.

Re: Moose creek mishap

There is even a Whitetail refuge along the Columbia in Washington near Skamokawa. Now if anyone not from the North West can correctly pronounce the name of that little town you get two stars. At least. It's in Wahkiakum county if you're looking for it.

Re: Moose creek mishap

Is that guy still selling lots for an airpark in Skamokawa? Was probably 8 - 10 years ago when I checked that out. Pretty area, just too far out of town for my family. I think it was going to be called "East Airpark" or something like that. Haven't even thought of it till you popped that name in there! Skuh- mock -a-way is what I remember for the pronunciation.

That's the rare & endangered Columbia white-tail. Different subspecies.

I live in nearby Cathlamet, which is 5 miles from Skamokawa in Wahkiakum County... How that for crazy names! I used to land there periodically, nice guy. However haven't seen any home construction yet. The airport is 18JY "Skamokawa East Valley" http://www.airnav.com/airport/18JY

The big local drama is the refuge dike is failing with no $$ to fix it, so it may not be there much longer. They have been herding deer and moving them to Ridgfield.
