MOOSE CREEK WOLF
A general forum for anything related to flying the backcountry. Please check first if your new topic fits better into a more specific forum before posting.
Last week a wolf came into a campsite on the airstrip and attacked a camper's dog. The dog was tied to a tree outside of the camper's tent. It happened at night while the campers were in their tent. They came out of their tent and saw the wolf with their flashlight. They scared it away.
The dog had several punctures on its neck and elsewhere. The dog did survive.
I believe these wolves consider all canines as competition and they do not appear to be very afraid of humans. I do not think they are a danger to us unless they are really hungry.
I also believe these wolves have migrated thruout the Idaho backcountry. We heard them howling at the Backcountry fly-in at Johnson Creek in June. They can travel long distances and they are very smart.
Be careful out there

I heard the same story from the caretaker at Fish Lake, John, who flies a beautiful 185. After hearing them howl over the weekend I just went and bought my two wolf tags ($31.50 ea) and am leaving wednesday night for the back country to volunteer some time to a good cause of "thinning the heard". Hopefully me and my 25-06 will make them a little more scared of humans but I'm sure the chances are slim of getting one.

Many times I have called wolves in to camp. They are smart but will come in if you howl and Waite for them to howl back. They think of you as another wolf in there hunting ground. It is one of the most exciting things I have done. Stand your ground and have fun.

I've backpacked with a number of dog owners who always take their dogs with them - except when in wolf country. They're pretty much wolf bait.

Doing my best to make the dream a reality!
safe to say that they should have had their .410's pointed with the flashlight...glad to report that east of town here in I.F. the horse-mounted folks have taken no crap from the wolves when it comes to their livestock...if wolves are harrassing your animals and etc, take no prisoners, stick up for your stuff and let the lead fly, tags or not...!

$31.50 is the non-resident price. It was $180 but around the 1st of August they changed the rules and prices. Residents only pay $11 or so. I am planning on getting up on the ridges prior to daylight and using an electronic call (legal) using a coyote howl (I don't think it has a wolf howl). I'm hoping they will view me as competition and come a runnin. I have called in lots of coyotes and even killed one with a bow and it's very exciting and I can only imagine how much better it will be with a 100lb animal that could decide to eat me! Should be fun.

What kind of careless, low IQ, disloyal, un-intelligent, bitch-slap-deserving idiot ties his best friend outside to a tree in wolf country?
If I'd have been there, the dog's owner would have had a few puncture marks in his neck too.

That is probably right, but I think the wolves also consider them "lunch"......
Win-win-from the wolves perspective....

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process...

With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).
Success has many fathers...... Failure is an orphan.

Hey, EZFlap might have the best idea...any annoying dog in your neighborhood that the owner might let you "take for a little walk"...on the wild side that is and leave the electronic call at home!
