Matt,

I just figured this whole thing out. You are the rider/climber in that story: http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=503537

You see, I've traveled overseas a ton this year and spent many nights in the Hotel reading Adventure Rider reports. Its the only time I have to do it. These stories take a while to read and there is no peace at home or the office so trips overseas are made easier reading others adventures.

The story about your journey to Phoenix and climbing Pyramid Peak gave me the shivers in the hot Australian outback in October. I sent this link to some buddies who like to climb and ride as well. We all agree that the ledge you guys traversed was sick. And there is some strange vibe among Colorado guys who wander around talking about "fourteeners". I thought you might all be scruffy versions of "Chester" the molester!  jk

Anyways, I've enjoyed reading your stories on adv and here at bcp. At the end of the day, some guys just get it done- Thanks for sharing with the terminal wanna-be's.

Dayum, that's a hell of a compliment (I think  ).

Besides flying, climbing 14ers has always been a passion of mine, and after 10 years and I will finish them up next summer (only 6 left). It's really what started it all and I've just applied to other areas in my life. I don't think of myself as a scruffy molester though, just scruffy and willing to take a risk to view life a little closer to the edge.

Speaking of edges and ledges, this was by far the most terrifying moment in my life - climbing the capitol bonus ridge. I was so terrified with fear that, at one point, I couldn't move off the 18" wide rock peering 1600' down each side. My cousin (Ryan) on the other hand is a total nut case and thought it was fun. #-o

OK, enough with the hi-jack. Sorry, back to bike and plane pics.

Re: Motorcycles and Airplanes Thread

I would love to get one of these little guys. I first saw one advertised locally. It was a freight damaged and the dealer only wanted $1800. I should have bought it. I have always wondered if they will fit in the back of a Cessna? Only 125 lbs!

Does that deal between the landing gear work good? Looks like it lets you put a wide airplane through a narrow door.

Re: Motorcycles and Airplanes Thread

Marty,

That looks like a Johnson Sidewinder, and that's exactly what it does. The guy who designed and builds them, lives just up the road here. He's a character.
His specialty is rebuilding Thrush spray planes and converting to Walter engines.

Re: Motorcycles and Airplanes Thread

MTV, and Marty,

Yes it is a sidewinder, and ya they work pretty darn good. An empty 602 is around 6000lbs and it picks it up and will move it as fast as you care to run with it, the wheels steer, and it will effortlessly manipulate the airplane wherever you need it. When the sidewinder wheels are straight, the airplane t/w will go to 90* and the airplane will roll sideways...If I remember right that hangar door is 40' and the 602s wings are almost 60'. I like them better when they have the full size tires on them, but that one works just fine.
As a side note I got to fly one of those Walter powered thrushes right out of rebuild... It worked pretty good too, but I wouldn't trade the -34 I'm flying now for it
Take care, Rob

Re: Motorcycles and Airplanes Thread

I just saw this and knew it wood be appreciated here. The unassembled engine and drive would fit in a case in the back of the plane and you could quickly put the frame together in the bush... with only basic wood cutting tools.

Not my bike and obviously not my plane. Just thought it was worthy to post here.

I have 7 of that basic vintage of Ducati. Too fragile to stuff in an airplane, too heavy (200 to 250) for the performance and capabilities. I will keep mine as summer sunday toys to race against my wife with on back roads. With that said, I think that entire trip report is one of the coolest things I have ever seen and share it with my Facebook friend every time I come across it.

I was going to put up some pictures from around my hangar. Right now there is only half an airplane, but about a dozen Italian bikes, and one German, oh, and a 1973 Honda CT 70. Theres is another 6 at home, 5 Italian, one Austrian. Instead I thought I would share one of my first editing attemps with Powerdirector and a GoPro Hero HD. The title come from the name of the song, Trash Flavored Trash, and the name of this bike "Sparkles" Previous owner named it, I kept it.
