Mowing at Red's Horse Ranch (68D)

Red's Horse Ranch (68D) is located in the Eagle Cap Wilderness within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in northeastern Oregon. Under the regulations governing designated wilderness areas, the use of motorized equipment within the Eagle Cap is generally prohibited.

For many years, the airfield at Red’s has been mowed using an old mule drawn mower. In 2021 the USFS provided a grant to purchase a new mower and helped deliver the mower by helicopter during a training exercise. In early July, volunteers from the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF), the Idaho Aviation Association (IAA), and the Wallowa County Pilots Association (WCPA) mowed the airfield with the help of our old friends, Bird and Bat, two lovely mules owned by Jim and Holly Akenson. Bill Ables has reported that the airfield is now in beautiful condition and ready for campers.

Thank you all for tending to this strip. Mowing is what keeps it viable, what with all the grass growing in the basin. I love getting in there. Is the Forest Service back in the buildings, or is that a bygone era?
