MT - 2 to 3, Took the Plunge...

Well I pulled the trigger. I pick up my new nickel MT from Flight Resources tomorrow! It's fun to read all the conjecture on the web on what is better... MT, Black Mac, 2 blade, 3 blade... but nothing beats first hand experience, and I'm excited how it all will actually shake out. I decided to go with the black w/ white tips. Thanks to John from Flight Resources for the support, and thanks for supporting BCP!

Re: MT - 2 to 3, Taking the Plunge...

Good for you! That bigger Continental will swing it well.

I'm still on the fence myself between 2 and 3 blade. With a 270hp (estimated) IO-540 up front, it could go either way.

Seems like RWM was convinced the 2-blade was superior for his 540 Maule after trying both.

11+ lbs more on the nose for the 4-place Bearhawk with 540 could get a little forward CG in the balance.

There's something in the audio note of a 3-blade that is weird to me...it sounds higher and not as soothing as the lower rumble of a 2-blade. Anyone else notice this?

Price.

I'm around 275hp with the PPonk so I went with the 2 blade. They suggested anything shy of 290hp would do better with the 2 blade and a few anecdotes on various threads back that up.

Love the sound, love the prop. Butter smooth.

I really have no idea if it was the right move... The 2 blade would have been just fine, but in the the end, I think ego won out. #-o

I rode in a Piper Dakota with 3 blade Hartzell and I was impressed how quiet it was and it sounds like a turbine. Quiet is about the most important thing for me anymore.

You are crazy to get the very average 3-blade. Reports are the new whizbang 4-blade, made with Graphene and hardened unicorn semen for the leading edges is about to be released. Supposed to be the cats ass! It's 25.35lbs lighter than the 3-blade as well. Won't have any CG issues to deal with. And quiet.....sounds like an owl fart. Inaudible.
Just saying.....

For sale: 3-Blade MT, less than 200 hours. Selling because I heard it will fall apart if I venture off the pavement (which I never do). I’ll be upgrading to the new unicorn semen leading edges.

Thanks Kev, Im sure I will. Pretty pumped actually! Its a bit of a stretch considering Im doing an engine at the same time, but I think its going to be the right prop for me.

Re: MT - 2 to 3, Taking the Plunge...

Are you going to be able to do an apples to apples comparison? Both props on the same engine? That would be great to see how they compare.

What diameter did you get?

I too am looking to sell my 3-blade MT in favor of the new unicorn prop. I also don't venture off the pavement for fear that my wood prop will fall apart. Somehow Prosaria beat me to the photo of the plane in the same spot, so I will post a pic from a different location very close to the pavement.

Hey, I think I have that one too: Image

I raise you an arctic sand dune:

Re: MT - 2 to 3, Taking the Plunge...

Dang it Prosaria.....

Ok. I had to dig a bit but found a photo of the Arctic Sand Dune; however, it is from an era when I was flying behind a metal prop and not this flimsy wood stuff. I can't wait for the unicorn prop.

Image

So...I see your sand dunes and raise you a funky rock formation in the background.

Image

And thank God we can do all of this stuff without having to leave the pavement and subject our props to abuse.

This thread just keeps getting better. Wish I could compete but I just have a dinky 2 blade MT and 230 hp.

Re: MT - 2 to 3, Taking the Plunge...

This thread is ridiculous..... Everyone knows unicorns are mythological #-o Woven molly mule's mane.... that's where the future of props lies =D> =D> =D>

As to the pavement pounders photobombs....

I see your sandy sand play...
Image

and your... river rock decor shots....
Image

and call with a pair.... from one tip of the country to another (and ya, the extensive use of pavement in between really makes me miss my metal :^o )

Re: MT - 2 to 3, Taking the Plunge...

and if unsolicited opinions mean much to the OP, the airplane below has had multiples of both flavors of the props you considered.... It also wears a well massaged O-520 (let the peanut gallery's imagination wander on the semantics there....) It is the owners opinion that your choice was a good one. No one builds all that brute power into an airplane seeking J3 like flight characteristics ( better CG in some configurations is the only plus to the 2 blade on your set up), had you gone that route you would have left a decent amount of wasted power on the table. Now you have the prop to convert that extra power to thrust =D> =D> =D>

Image

Or you could go unicorn #-o

Take care, Rob
