Re: My boyhood dream - a C170 summer trip

In preparation of my trip I've been doing a lot of flying these past days, close to 15 hours.
And it's been a ton of fun to get myself up to speed and to tune in to the new engine, the new prop and the new panel of Whiskyblue, my Super 170.

Weather - and smoke - permitting I'll be heading to Montana first and am plotting routes going North either through Michigan and crossing the lake via North Fox Island or heading up through Wisconsin.
Any recommendations for places to camp along those two routes?

Next on my list right now is Sky Harbor and then Winifred as first stop in MT.

Getting excited....

Getting Whiskyblue ready for my trip.

Starting her up and checking for leaks after I changed the oil.

It seems to be south of your proposed route but the Black Hills area may be worth a stop. Custer State Park Airport (3V0) is set up for camping with at least an outhouse and fire pit. I would also call Spearfish (KSPF) which is another nice airport in the area. It would be a great opportunity to fly by both Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument. To the west of there by Hulett (W43) Devil's Tower is pretty impressive.

Re: My boyhood dream - a C170 summer trip

I’m back!
Back from 37 days flying across the country.

Whiskyblue took me from MA to MT, ID, UT, CO, AR, AL, GA, VA, PA, to name the states I visited rather than landed only for fuel or an overnight stop.
Finally I flew up through the Hudson River VFR corridor back to MA, one of the highlights, for sure.

Boyhood dream realized!
I still can’t believe it….

During those five weeks I was constantly busy processing the impressions and dealing with the challenges that came my way, and therefore didn't have the time to feed social media enough to maintain even a semi-coherent stream of posts.

Now I’m back, back in Europe that is, trying to digest my experiences and posting about them individually - on a new thread.

Sounds like a great adventure, looking forward to reading about it. Sometimes it seems like a lot of work building and maintaining planes, but these trips can be so rewarding that it all becomes worthwhile.
