Calling all 170 pilots
Paul Odum, CEO of the STC Group that holds the Trio Autopilot STC is looking to add the Cessna 170 to the Approved Model List (AML).
To do this, they need a 170 to do the first install in and get FAA approval.
Best option is if the aircraft was close to Oxnard California (KOXR) as the install and FAA signoff would take four or so weeks. The cost of the install is the responsibility of the owner and they ballpark $10k for Autopilot, STC and Installation.
Being that mine is in pieces spread across three states on the other side of the country, I’m not a good option.
It’s worth mentioning that The STC Group is the only affordable autopilot I know of that’s willing to take the time to put the 170 on their AML. I understand where the others are coming from as the 170 market is tiny compared to other models. They are also the only ones that have the earlier 172s already approved. The rest stop at the 172F, making the 170 that much more difficult to get on their AML.
If someone lives near KOXR and is willing to use their aircraft as the initial approval; perhaps other 170 owners might chip in to offset some of the install cost?
I’m not associated with these guys in any way but I’d love to see the 170 added to the AML so that others like myself could install it later on.
