Here's a tale of woe relating to the 2006 Lycoming crank AD.
Friend has an IO-540 affected by the crank AD. He's a non-pilot aircraft owner and his mechanic never told him about the AD, or about Lycoming's offer to send a new crank kit for "only" $2,000 if you did it prior to 2009. He just found out about the AD and the $20,0000 replacement bill that is now going to come with it, and he's at the end of the mandatory 12-year replacement period. Engine has less than 400 hours and is corrosion free, having lived its entire life in a high dry climate.
Does anyone know whether Lycoming has ever extended the $2,000 replacement program beyond 2009? The 2009 deadline was arbitrary in the first place, and it seems terribly unfair that this guy should have to pay the full $20,000 to replace Lycoming's defective crank on a 400 hour motor.
He can probably sue the mechanic for not telling him about Lycoming's $2,000 offer back in 2006-2009, but he would prefer to simply get the crank replaced if he can still get Lycoming to honor the $2,000 deal. They extended the AD in 2012 to include some additional engines, and I'm wondering whether Lycoming extended the $2,000 deal to those newly-affected owners?
I thought I would check and see whether anyone here had any thoughts or input that might help this guy.
