New Alaskan Bushwheel wheel/brake product line

Pretty much Cleveland copies, but black! I haven't purchase the Groves I had planned to yet, wondering if these are a better choice?

I fondled them at the airmen's show and they seem good. $500 more good? /caveman

I have no idea if these are manufactured in the same shop as their 10" wheels are (think Maule's and big rocks) but if they are you can be assured of outstanding quality!

The wheels are aluminum. No corrosion issues.

I'm hoping to try a set soon, I'll let you know! The black on black wheel/tire looks killer and I mean, c'mon, that's all that matters

We recently ordered a set for a 180 here. I like the fact that they are a direct replacement for Clevelands.

In you TR you mentioned flying your BH to Alaska. Imagine how much easier it would be to get a replacement part for these in the middle of no where... More $$$ than Groves, Less $$$ than Clevelands. Maybe a good compromise between money saved and value added?

That is often the case made for Clevelands in the Experimental camp: parts availability.

I have 2 questions:

1. I have 1.5" axles as the Bearhawk axles are integrated (i.e. welded) into the gear leg. I see that the 199-62 are for a 1.5" axle, but are 3-bolt, double puck. Which Cessna 180's used 1.5" axles? I thought all the bolt-on axles were 1.25"

2. Is 3-bolt adequate for 2500 lb max gross with 31's?

1.) Bolt ons come in either size, but I personally haven't seen a 180 with 1.25 axles.

2.) The argument that 6 bolt wheels are stronger is an urban legend stemming from comparisons of lighter duty 3 bolt wheels against C206 (heavy duty) 6 bolt wheels. I have both 3 bolt and 6 bolt in both 1.5" (for my 180) and 1.25" (for my cub). The 31's and 29's I have run on my 180 have all been on the 3 bolts. I have somewhere a response that SB or Bob Turner or one of them guys got back from Parker which stated that there was no gross increase in going from 3 bolt to 6. The wheels only got stronger in different series.

Take care, Rob

Zane, even your old 170 has 1.5'' axles. :P

Do they weigh the same as clevelands? I don't see weights listed on the web site. It used to be that it was cheaper to buy a whole wheel/brake kit than to just get a spare set of wheels w/ discs only. Nice to see an alternative.

I could have sworn they were 1.25" but I've had to expunge a lot of old memories for new ones lately. 8)

Re: New Alaskan Bushwheel wheel/brake product line

There has been a long argument over the 3 bolt or 6 bolt wheels... With the large tires I have become a proponent of the 6 bolt simply after talking to notable Alaskan mechanic Eddie Trimmer who has personally seen 3 bolt wheels break bolts with heavy use. So, I guess you could say it depends on your mission.

For the record, My cub with 8:50 X 10 Gar Areos has 3 bolt wheels.

I don't know the weight, but when I picked them up at the air show the first thing I said was that they feel heavier. That's when I found out they are aluminum rather than magnesium. He confirmed they are heavier, but I didn't ask how much.
