NEW Desser 8.50 Tubeless

Didn't want to walk all over the other thread so...

Anyone with experience with the new Desser tubeless 8.50?

https://www.desser.com/pc_product_detai ... 08CFC38EC8

I have the original tube type 8.50 smoothy and like them but I sure would have preferred tubeless. Wish they had them when I bought the tube type as a smaller tubeless was what I replaced. I have a low gross (1232) so for some extra cushion I would like lower pressures but I fear spinning and the torn valve stem. I run the tube type at 13psi and don't feel terribly comfortable under that. Plus in a really light plane, it sure doesn't hurt in getting rid of some pounds (tubes)

That leads to the second question, what would be considered the lower end of what one should use for pressure in a tubeless? Yes, no chance of valve stem damage but there surely is a bottom limit where there is a danger of "popping" off the rim. FYI, other than runup and turning a slow corner I hardly ever touch the brakes and don't need to.

The illustration in your link appears to be a standard Cleveland wheel. To add a question, what type of wheel is required, what does the valve stem look like, and how does this all go together to ensure a seal that will support a tubeless tire?

Re: NEW Desser 8.50 Tubeless

I went back and looked at the links of both the tube type and the tubeless 8.50 smoothies and it is the same picture for both so there won't be any visual difference. I only posted the link to indicate that they were indeed being made.

I have Matco rims and when I took them apart to mount the tube type Dessers, the stem that was with the previous tubeless tire was very similar to one from an automotive application; just a stem that stuck in the hole in the rim. The believe the Matco rims have a seal (o-ring) between the halves that seal in the pressure.

FYI, the 8.50s were (before the one being mentioned) the only one of their smooth "tundra" types that WEREN'T tubeless or at least could be used both tube or tubeless.

I imagined you were flying an experimental with experimental wheels, but the photo in your link caused me to wonder. Thank you.

Your link is giving me a product not available message. I'm not finding what you're referring to with a quick google search. Any other links you can post?

Re: NEW Desser 8.50 Tubeless

I see this one: www.desser.com/Aircraft-Tires-and-Tubes ... SMOOTH.asp

But am not seeing the one you mention. I have a set of the 8.50-6 smoothies but haven't mounted them yet as I was running 29" Bushwheels and am going to 'downsize', yeah, unheard of right!! I see no need to wear out a set of $3000 tires with the flying I do and feel the 8.50's are plenty good for the places I have been going to.

I didn't know they made a tube and also a tubeless version of the tire. I tried searching for it but couldn't find anything.

Having said this, I bought a 'tubless' kit from Matco to use with the tires on the Matco rims. It consists of a big O-ring the goes in the groove between the wheel halves and a tubeless type valve stem.

You are right; 10 days after the first post and Desser dropped the link to the 8.50 tube and/or tubeless smoothies as well as the 29" and 31" tundras.

Time for an email to Desser with a WTF.

For 6-inch wheels?

850-6 4 PLY AERO CLASSIC SMOOTH TUNDRA TUBELESS appears to be SKU 31338.

Recommend using Desser.com's search function using keyword "tundra".

Good luck finding an appropriate 6-inch tubeless Cleveland wheel...

I think this is literally the same tire just approved for tubeless use? The "Tech Support" wasn't much help.

Re: NEW Desser 8.50 Tubeless

I see they have added this gem to their website, in super-bright letters:

***WE HAVE TAKEN THE STANDARD TIRE AND BUFFED THE TREAD OFF***

Obviously these will not wear as long as the standard tire with tread.

Maybe they had a complaint....? One doesn't usually advertise the bad news.

Oh - Wait - that is for the light weight version. Not sure if the same is true of the heavier one, I can't find the right page on the website.

I only see that listed on the 21/800-6, not the standard 850-6 tundra or the "tubeless" 850-6 tundra

Re: NEW Desser 8.50 Tubeless

Thanks for the product #. Yup, that number in their search is the only way I could find it again.

hamer

I don't think this is the same tire as the tube type. At that weight it is probably beefed up some (I'm guessing in the bead area) as it weighs over three pounds more than the tube type that I now have on which (without the tube) weigh less than 10#. So pretty sure there is a difference, just not certain what that difference is. I was hoping on saving some weight with the tubeless but it doesn't appear that will be the case as it will be pretty much the same weight as the tube type once you've added a tube. I probably will switch at some time just for the possibility that I can run lower pressures than with the tube type.

Re: NEW Desser 8.50 Tubeless

Must have updated their website since we were on it earlier. I see both tires now but they lack any description that mentions the differences other than tube vs. tubeless.

What are you clicking on to even get that? I'm not finding it.

Jeez, it's not rocket surgery. Under the tires and tubes window, in the lower right corner is a link that says tundra tires. That should take one to all smoothy tires, the 8.00, both 8.50s, 27s, 29s, 31s or whatever they've got along with some useful info, including weight. I guess that seems too logical :?
