I recently had a chance to check out the AV8OR. It is an impressive unit. The touch screen feature really makes scrolling a snap and the screen graphics are excellent... The large screen is great for us folks who wear glasses.

Does it have "Terrain " like the 296 ? Does it have a Navigation Page like the Garmin 296 /396 or 496 ? How`about the HSI ? In looking at the pictures on the internet it appears that they have adapted a ground unit to fly ???

Has all of the above except HSI. I've had one for about a month and only been able to fly with it once. The touch screen is very cool. You can punch up any designator for intersection, airport, vor, whatever via a qwerty style touch pad keyboard. No scrolling through identifiers etc. When I get a chance to fly it more and do a pirep I'll post it here... Oh, just received the wxworks receiver for the xmweather, so I need to try that out also. (The AV80R includes a 250.00 coupon towards the wxworks receiver)

I have a 496 and love it, but that ^^ is my main complaint. The text input style is seriously antiquated. While it does have a smart search, and narrows down the possible identifiers as you punch in more characters, you're still scrolling through the letters of the alphabet with a joypad. A simple pop-up onscreen qwerty keyboard would be a fine addition.
It sounds like B-K is doing their homework with interface design.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

The evaluation I read essentially said that it is extremely mediocre compared to a Garmin unit. Still liking my 296.
BTW, used the new version of Mapsource Topo in AK this summer. More detail. I like it and will purchase the new CD.

Sorta' apples and oranges. The AV80R is 1/3 the cost of a 496 w/o the WxWorx receiver. I like the idea of Honeywell B/K providing Garmin some competition, even if the products are substantially different.
