Hey gang,
Just wanted to make a first post and say hello! I've passed through this site in the past but never signed up, I'm starting to shop for a 185 so I thought I'd better start reading up. If I can pull it off it will be my....2....3.......5th airplane.
I was born and raised in Oshkosh. Not a fly-in joke, I literally had my mail delivered there. Went to high school and college there, my parents still live in the same house. Pumped gas for Basler for a few years, got checked out in the DC-3 but never got to fly it after (only the pistion, never flew the turbine). Attended every airshow from since my mom was pregnant with me until....well over 30 years straight before I took a break. Sorry to say I'm kinda over it! For so many of y'all is a dream trip to make. For me it's just meh, home. No bigs. Isn't that terrible? Never have flown into the show, or camped. So that's a 185 daydream of mine.
I'm a professional pilot, home is north Texas now and one of the best places I've ever lived. I'm a long range shooter, nationally ranked actually, that's fun. Kind of a petrolhead too, got a couple sweet cars. Married over 10 years to the best girl ever, that's all that matters, the rest is just fluff. You know how to tell when your date with a pilot is half over? He says "Enough about me, let's talk about airplanes!"
First plane was an RV-8 kit. Built the tail then sold it for a 1957 H35 Bonanza. Best plane ever. It's for sale again right now and I could buy it three times for the price of a 185 and though I would love to have it back part of me is saying "You did that, gotta do something new." Sold the Bonanza when I switched jobs and took a pay cut and a few years later bought a Kitfox SuperSport kit. Had that about ready to cover when we had a furlough. I survived it by 100 numbers but put the airplane up for sale because I didn't know if there would be a second round. There wasn't it turned out but couldn't take the chance. Two years ago I got myself a Stearman but I lost the airplane after less than a year together, don't wanna talk about it.
So for now a lot of reading and researching. Not so much trying to get my financial ducks in a row, just in the same pond.
Cheers,
Nate
