New member, Austin flyin questions.

Hello All,

I'm new at this board but have been lurking for sometime. I fly out of PVF (Placerville, CA). Been flying for many years but don't consider myself a seasoned backcountry flyer. I built and fly a Rans S-7S which if you're unfamiliar with it is a Cub like, short field, tanden seat experimental. I been slowly expanding my flights into Idaho, Utah and Oregon for the last couple of years and really enjoy the backcountry strips. I've met a few on this board and hope to meet many more. The info I've picked up here has really helped to expand my wings.

My question! I've read the thread on the Austin flyin and have decided to give it a try. If I have it right the best way to thread the restricted and MOA's from crossing the hill at Tahoe would be to head up to and overfly Falllon and then down the VFR corridor at R4812 & R4804A just north of Hwy 50. Does this sound right?

Also on the Austin thread there was some talk of being able to get 91 auto gas. Does anyone know if this is true? I'll need to pick up some fuel somewhere before heading back.

Thanks for any help you can give.
Bill.

Fallon Desert, who operates the MOA here, is on 126.2, however I never call them unless I want to request to cross their "Restricted Airspace", in that case, I just would "request transit your restricted airspace direct to 9U3". If they are unable to clear you through the Restricted Airspace, which is about 50% of the time, they will send you through the VFR corridor. That means just follow the old Highway 50, between 7 and 8 thousand feet, or simply tell them you are "unfamiliar", and they will give you step by step to Austin. All of the controllers are usually trainees.

don't hesitate to call me with questions 775-964-2410 at home or 775-223-3613 on my cell.

Above is info from Coyote Ugly from page 2 of this forum. I'm sure he won't mind if you call him. He's a fantastic person and I'm telling you, if you plan to go to Austin and don't know Joe, make sure to meet him. You'll have alot of fun with those guys.

Above is info from the other thread about the Austin fly in.

I'm so bummed. I'm typing this in with one hand. Screwed up my left wrist. I won't be able to go to the Austin Fly-in. I was really looking forward to meeting Joe, and seeing all the desert south of the Black Rock, on the way. Guess there's next year. I had all my sh*t ready to go. Using the wrong hand for stuff sucks, too.

That's it, Fallon Desert is on 126.2 if you want to monitor, or get flight following. The controllers are usually trainees, and are happy to give you instructions if you are unfamiliar with the corridor, or it is a VFR corridor, you can fly through without communication with anyone.

I don't have a chart here now, but I seem to remember that the corridor is between R4816S and R4804, but basically it just means fly right over Highway 50 for that 6 or 7 miles between the two Restricted areas. You'll see sand mountain on your left. I fly 7500 Ft eastbound and 8000 goin west.

I do have a tank in the back of my pickup, and we can haul 91 oct auto gas from town if necessary.

Call me with any other questions anytime 775-964-2410 h 775 223-3613 c... joe

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Coyote,

I picture the character flying that ship to be a clone of the gyrocopter pilot in the original Road Warrior. You'll have to take a million photos.

I will not be able to attend and I feel like I'm missing my greatest chance to view a UFO.

Thanks Coyote and others who posted helpful replies. My buddy and I will be flying in two Rans S-7S, leaving pvf about 7:00 am. We'll try weaving our way into the vfr corridor near Fallon.
