I know that a lot of you are headed to Idaho this week. However, for us poor slobs that can't go, I am trying to get a NM backcountry group organzied here in NM. We will have a meeting this Saturday (6/28) at 12:00 at my house at E98 - MidValley (Los Lunas). The purpose of the organization would be as follows:
1. To document the backcountry strips here in NM and get them on a website. The website host for the Idaho group and the Utah group has agreed to have a NM website with a very similar format. I would ask our members to start taking pictures and document sites so we can get them on the website.
2. Promote legislation in NM to exempt those who donate or contribute their airstrip from lawsuits. Right now if someone has a private strip and they allow public use, they are open to lawsuits. We would like to change that. I have already talked to the director of aviation for NM and he is willing to sponsor legislation in the upcoming legislative sessioin (early 09).
3. Promote safety in the backcountry. Maybe have an annual backcountry workshop and teaching course.
4. And occasionally, just have fun and have a flyin!!!!
Rol Murrow from Wolf Aviation will make a presentation on efforts other states are making to advance backcountry flying. I think you will find it interesting.
Addiitionally, the local EAA chapter will be holding a Young Eagles Flyin all morning with breakfast available.
My house is at the airpark at E98 (MidValley, Los Lunas NM). We will be supplying burgers and sodas. All you have to do is show up. The meeting will be at 12:00 and I will try to have you done and on your way by 1:00 or 1:30. My house is on the north side of the airpark, but not on the runway, farther west. On the north side of the runway there are three rows of t-hangars. My house is just west of those t-hangars and the hangar where we will be meeting is on the west side of the house. My address is 3659 Mooney and you can do a mapquest search for a map. The house is a two story with white rock on the exterior.
If you are flying in, there is a big open grass area on the very north side of the runway. It is just west of the airstrip on the north side of the t-hangars. You can park there and it is an easy walk to my house from there (be careful you have to taxi across a road to get there and sometimes people in cars are not very smart). Unicom Frequency is 122.9 and the calm wind runway is 36.
If possible, PM me so I can know how many to expect for the burgers (I've heard that you guys get a little mean when your hungry).
If your interested in joining but can't make the meeting, PM me and I will send you an application. Dues will probably be about $30 a year and go to cover costs of website.
Hope to see you all there!
Regards, Larry
