"Lonnie" flies a cub. And in addition to his shots in Long Rocks/Props (and other videos) he markets custom backcountry adventure-type lessons in the Alaskan summers.

Well Gump, the "blue canoe's" usually get through OK :D The newest one called the fairweather is quite aptly named, [-X it is a high speed cat design and they won't run in more that about 25 knots of wind, the older boats, even the little ones go in anything. [-o<

Arrrggghhhhhhh. If the clips are any indication, it'll be the same made up drama bullshit as on Ice Road Truckers. Oh well, the scenery is nice and it's fun to see old airplanes I used to know.

Re: new reality show on AK

I guess we should be prepared for an influx of new users around here after this thing airs...

I have always been an avid fly fisherman When the movie "A River Runs Through It" came out, every butthole who could wave a broom handle over his head began showing up to fish with a new $400 Orvis rod and less than enough skill to present a decent cast.

Let's not forget the 9-5 office schmucks that turn into instant bad-ass biker gangs when their wives arent making them babysit because they bought a Japanese Harley replica.

What's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah.....Poser.

I suppose we might worry about pilot posers showing up in the backcountry ... but given the barriers to entry into our world (of time and money, not to mention piloting skills), it's all going to shake out in the end. Poser pilots will have relatively short lifespans, in general. If the result of the new show is a few more aspiring bush pilots, or just recreational flyers like me, and maybe a bunch more who won't become pilots but are much more sympathetic to our concerns, that's a big plus.

I'm not too concerned that we will be overrun with posers and I agree that it could inspire many. Zane's comment just reminded me of the "River Runs Through It" phenomenon (sp?). It takes a lot more commitment than a trip to the Orvis outfitter and a handfull of cash to fly backcountry and live to tell about it.

However, in line with Zane's prediction, we may see a few more questions surfacing about like: "Which tundra tires should I put on my Long EZ?" or more debates about why they think Tri-gears are better than conventional gear because they don't know how to fly a plane with wheels in the right place :P

Heh heh...I will admit to being inspired by A River Runs Through It. You can't help but enjoy the story and scenery, even if there was a lot of gratuitous false casting. :)

My hope is that like me, people will be attracted to aviation because of bush flying. The very concept of backcountry/bush flying and the challenge of the great frontier coupled with man-vs-machine...I cannot resist and have been in love for as long as I can remember. Shows like this can only improve the image of GA, even with the reality show drama. The TV splattered with scenes of regular people in flannel and jeans flying 4-seat taildraggers instead of rich golfers climbing out of a Citation Mustang is good!

Re: new reality show on AK

If EAA, AOPA and other aviation organizations had half a brain, they would purchase a ten second spot at the end of each episode, where it says something like "You always wanted to be a pilot ... go to http://www.eaa.org and start making your dream a reality"

The membership org's could generate thousands of new members and (as mentioned) we could get thousands of pro-aviation voters.

Re: new reality show on AK

Remember it is just a show. Any one with commencents will think first before doing. They need to work together and get along. But then there would be no show. The old guy is going to get some one hurt. The mechanic on there needs to re think things and look them over before doing his repairs. Makes me wonder how many others will come to Alaska after seeing that show. You just dont go some place and start to dig any more... Ken in Alaska
