New to the site Maule pilot

Well, just thought I'd introduce myself and this seemed to be as good a thread as any.

I'm Kirk Larson and live in Fairbanks, Alaska. I own a 70 Maule M4-220C on EDO 2440's. I have skis but rarely use them.
My plane is on the tail end of a nearly year long, ground-up restoration (should be done in a few weeks...hopefully!)
I'm a structural engineer working as a building inspector for the city and enjoy hunting, flying, camping and restoring old cars/trucks (sounds almost like a personal ad---bust size on requiest :D )
Got a wife and two kids.

There is a couple of threads in the tutorials section that explain it. :?

Good luck :D

Mostly I believe you create an album, and then load them into the thread from there, I think

Welcome Capt. Kirk. from a fellow M4-220C hot rod owner. I got my seaplane rating in a Cessna 150/150hp on edo's and always wondered how my M4 would perform as a floatplane. Looking forward to seeing some pictures and hearing more about your project.

Sold my 182 way back when to a furnace tech in Fairbanks. Manny something or another. N91510, great old 182M.

Any aircraft only 10 years younger than myself has to be old. ;-)

By comparison, Zanes 170 is ancient.

Might be an interesting thread. Age differential between pilot and a/c. I'm betting Zane might be a contender.

That's right, Captain, I'm giving her all she's got. We can only keep this up for another 12 seconds before the drive goes into thermal shutdown.

They perform fine...sticking the big float prop on the thing made a WORLD of difference. I'm guessing getting rid of that old Razorback and the nice new paint is gonna help too. I've got VG's which my mechanic will install soon...don't know what to expect with them but I've heard good stuff.

Which prop did you go with?

Your going to love the VG's. I did mine a year or so ago, along with the elevator seals and they really make a difference in the Maule's slow flight characteristics.

Welcome!

If you are on floats you likely won't be landing at PAIN but if you do give me a holler! Where do you fly out of? My A&P outfit is at Chena Marina and I'm in and out of there often

Went with a McCauley 2A34C201-90DA-8 which, I guess, is the longest prop I can use according to my mechanic. What are those elevator seals all about? Maule carry them?

Is PAIN the one right at the park entrance? If so, I've been in that one with my Luscombe.
My A&P is at Chena Marina and I keep my plane there as well. Mechanics name is Dave Coe.

Yup, Maule has 'em. Basically two pieces of tape, one stuck to the trailing edge of the horiz stab and the other stuck to the leading edge of the elevator. They are then stuck together in the middle and effectively seal any airflow between the Horz stab and the elevator. Result is a significant increase in elevator authority.

BTW, I did the VG's and elevator seals myself under the supervision of an A/P. Not really difficult at all. (And no, the VG's have not fallen off ;-) )
