New Wing for Just Highlander and Oleo Strut Gear

New wing has a Ribblett Airfoil Section, Automatic Leading Edge Slats, Trailing Edge Fowler Flaps, and Frise Ailerons with a gap seals.
Oleo Strut Landing Gear like the F24.
Slower stall, faster cruise and tougher gear. I wonder how much it weighs?
Pics are in the article.

Re: New Wing for Just Highlander and Oleo Strut Gear

I wonder what all these changes will do to the useful load of the airplane?!?! Can you still fold the wings and trailer it?!?!

I would imagine the new wing will be heavier than a stock wing, and the landing gear looks heavier too (and uglier  ).

Curious to see how these improvements will work out, although for now I have no basis for comparison as mine isn't finished yet

Beauty must be in the eye of the beholder :) If anyone at Oshkosh (jealous!) gets down to the Ultralight area please post some demo flight video!

This guy did almost the same thing to his Highlander (airfoil, slats, and even has the airfoil tail referenced in the Highlander article): http://www.homebuiltairplanes.com/forums/aircraft-design-aerodynamics-new-technology/9091-riblett-ga-30-613-5-compared-ga-35-412-a.html

Re: New Wing for Just Highlander and Oleo Strut Gear

I was just down at the ultralight section watching it fly a few hours ago.
It's pretty impressive, take offs where very short and the landing even shorter. It's a little hard for me to judge as everything flys so good here at 700'. There was a 5-10 mph wind ( it was also 90 degrees out) The landings where around 50' or less and take offs in the 80-100 foot range. I spoke with the pilot he said the plane had the 914 in it and was a heavy prototype at 860 pounds.

The gear is really nice has a lot of travel. He dropped it in a time or two and it never bounced even with 29" tires. Said it did add some drag though and it looked like it would.

It was by far and away the best preforming plane flying in the lsa section when I was there.
Although I would mention there where no carbon cubs either :D

At OSH for the week. I have watched the guys fly this bird. Very impressive. I believe he said $30-35k for that kit as set up, with no fwf.

Plane performs very, very well at slow speeds. Looks very controllable too. Wind gusts cross the runway yesterday to 22kt and the had no troubles.
