Okay, lake conditions are looking good on Wilson Bay (Gull Lake) for the ski fly-in wild rice soup deal on Saturday the 29th (near Madden's). If the lake gets bad for some reason we can just move it up above, but I don't forsee that.

If weather is lousy (Sunday is out for an alternate) Monday the 31st might work if people want to be out and about on New Year's Eve. Then it's the Green Mill in Bemidji on New Year's Day.

How about an update for the New Years day fly-in, How much snow?
Thinking about flying over on Bushwheels. Any groomed or snowmobile trails? Any number I can call to get some info.

Will be a little brisk tomorrow but **NOT** calling off the flyin. Snow is 6-12" deep and some drifting. Look for hazards before landing. Cars are using the lake now. Wheel a/c could land at BJI airport and take a courtesy car to the reaturant. I am going to show about 11-1130 no earlier. Winds and temps will only get better as the morning wears off. Here is a technical wx discussion for region. Hope to see you there. Fly safe. Be kind to your girl. Preheat her well, use a blanket to keep her that way, and watch the crankcase breather to eliminate a blown seal. Just like a real woman kinda :D Eric

NEW YEARS DAY WILL SEE SLOWLY DECREASING CLOUDS AND A DECREASE IN
WINDS... WITH TEMPERATURE RECOVERY ONLY INTO THE NEAR ZERO OR LOW
SINGLE DIGITS RANGE. EXPECT 850MB TEMPS OF MINUS 20 OR LESS OVHD
THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. TUESDAY EVE HAS SFC HIGH PRESSURE CENTER
PUSHING ACROSS THE AREA. THUS FAIR SKIES AND LIGHTER WINDS SHOULD
PRODUCE SOME OF THE SEASONS COLDEST TEMPERATURES BY WEDNESDAY
MORNING.

I did several touch and goes and taxied around a little in front of the Greenmill Restaurant during the last hour of daylight today.

There is all of 6-8 inches of snow, mostly packed and/or "crispy" without any fluff. There are drifts to make it a little bumpy, but I've seen much worse. There are lots of nearby ice houses. Wind is supposed to be from the NW tomorrow, and that is where is was from tonight.....several good wide/long landing/takeoff paths to the NW between ice houses.

Hope to see many there tomorrow.....I'll be there by 11:30 or earlier. I live only 10 miles due north, so I won't have an excuse if I'm late!

Hmmm...our resident Bellanca Cruisemaster driver may think twice about the snow depth...

once Eric and I unthaw, we'll start putting up some pictures. (need Zane to give me more room though). Captain Ben here made much of the fact that no Cirrus's cluttered up the frozen seascape...

Well it was cold and windy but we managed a turnout. Thanks to those hardy soles. We gave the local newspaper lady a ride too. Had 13 planes. Down from about 25 last year.

Guess the Blue Champ was an ugly ordeal. They killed the battery. Then the fuel wouldn't stop pouring out the carb. So they shut off the fuel and preheated it with 2 seperate stove and duct units. After about 1 hour they jump started it from a passing truck. Using a cowl cover would have probably been the solution. Where's the next gathering????

I was going to post some images from the Saturday Gull Lake event but then Kiwi beat me to it and posted all his way cool 180 stuff. Those shots need to be up for a while so everybody gets a chance to see them. Thus I'll hold off for now.

Next event? Hmmm.... we we're thinking Crane Lake and the Vermillion River run sometime this or next month. Then it's fishing Crappies on Crane in March.

Eric, the Brainerd squadron is going to try and make it to Crane Lake for lunch tomorrow. Then maybe fly Kabetogema or down the Vermillion river system to the big lake. So there's your next deal.
