Newbie checking in.

Say hello to an elderly newbie. Got my ticket at McGrath, AK in '66 and have logged a few. Started out with a C140 then a PA16. Back to a 120 and finally, for about twenty years, a PA20. They shredded my medical about ten years ago but I still have the memories.

Olderthandirt, How old is that? And why didn't you go with a LSP license before they shredded you medical? I am 76 and still flying, I just flew from Vale, OR. S49 to Buckeye, AZ. the 31st of Dec. I am sorry that all you have is memories, but I know that will happen to all of us one day. I gave an old pilot a plane ride as a wish foundation ride. You can find it here: http://youtu.be/0fOqaU96iLI . Enjoy.

They did not have a LSP option 10 years ago that's probably why.

Hey Olderndirt;

The memories can go on. Find a legal flying partner and go as often as you can make connections. Pay for his or her fuel, buy lunch and share your memories. I had a couple temporary lapses of my medical and never had a problem finding someone to fly with me. Former girlfriend got her medical and earned her ticket to fly with me. Get acquainted at the local airport, look for a pilot's group to attend functions and help with their activities. Bet you can get back in the air and enjoy the companionship that comes with it. New and younger pilots enjoy hearing how it used to be when we were rookies ourselves. Lots of good experience being lost as the older generation goes west...

Our paths may have crossed in years past. I was stationed at Tatalina AFS in 1973 - 74, and often passed through McGrath or just hung out at McGuires bar. I was the Station Civil Engineering officer at Tatalina, and Jim Norcross was my superintendent. Jim commuted daily from McGrath in his red Supercub and also out to his gold diggings out at Opher Creek. I got my first Caribou at Nixon Flats and several moose in the Gains Creek area.

We look forward to your input to the Back Country Pilot site.

Knew Jim very well. My former boss at MCG FAA, Dick Forsgren, had a cabin just down the road from Jim's mine at Anvil Creek and we used Jim's runway as it was a lot closer than the Ophir strip. I was gone from MCG by '73, working in ANC at Merrill Tower. Great country to learn about flying and other good stuff.

It is indeed good country. By the way, Jim is now flying an M-7 Maule and in addition to the property that he has in the Takotna area, he and his wife are presently living in Chugiak.
