Newest instrument pilot

Took my instrument checkride yesterday and passed!!! Pretty stoked. It took me almost 9 months due to instructor availability and my schedule. Did it in a 172SP with a 6 pack and G430W. Lots of work that's for sure. That was a pretty intense 6 hrs. One thing that made me chuckle during the debrief was "I could tell you fly taildraggers because you actually use your feet when you fly" :D Now back to some real flying....low and slow looking out the window!!

Re: Newest instrument pilot

He not only got the rating but put a new hot rod engine in his wife's Mustang, went to Oshkosh, and flew the flight engineer's seat all over the place in a C5A. Energy=Youth=Energy

Congratulations Joey. Another day in which to excel.

Re: Newest instrument pilot

Nice job man. Time to get that G3X combo installed in the Avid so you can fly the backcourse into Dewey Moore.

Re: Newest instrument pilot

Congratulations AvidFlyer - Joey! I met you at Homebuilt Camping Campground Host at Oshkosh when you stopped by to ask where to fill up with water. I mentioned your BCP hat - Sorry I didn't think to ask you to come in for a cold drink of water or soda. You looked like you were on a mission though. Wow - a C5A Flight Engineer!

Congratulations! Getting my instrument ticket was one of my favorite chunks of training. Pretty much every day since then (24 years now) I kid my wife by glancing out the window and saying, "it's a good day to fly!" She just rolls her eyes and gives a heavy sigh... Hehehe

Re: Newest instrument pilot

Congrats. That was one of my proudest achievements. It's harder than most people think and it really hones your pilot skills. There is no way to describe what it feels like to break out of the clouds and see the rabbit running toward the threshold of the runway right where you expect it to be or a perfectly executed hold entry and circuit. I learned without the aid of GPS. Now that I have one, I can't believe I ever flew IFR without it.

Nice work! =D>

Re: Newest instrument pilot

Thank you everyone! If you are working towards it let me know. I took extensive notes during the oral and my debrief to hopefully help out the next person. Didn't know Dewey had an ILS Zane =D>

Re: Newest instrument pilot

Congrats Joey! It is a big accomplishment to get your IR.

My IMC flying has been extremely rewarding and really stretched my piloting skills. It is all a matter of perspective. Landing off airport in tight, rough spots is pretty mundane for me compared to trying to get into my home airport with a low marine layer and a stiff crosswind on the ILS. Sharing the airspace with commercial operators and trying decide if I can shoot the ILS with a 25mph direct crosswind, then have the ceiling to circle to land into the wind etc. is a real challenge. A guy has to really think and plan, leave doors open etc., just like flying off airport.

And, in this day and age, modern IFR equipment doesn't carry much of a weight penalty. I am really looking forward to being able to depart and return through a layer in my Bush Plane when I re-do the panel down the road.

Re: Newest instrument pilot

Huge congratulations!! I am at the tail end of working on mine and it has come to a screaming halt. Buying a house...boooo :)
Using the Jeppesen program where I fly and we are in stage III. Brush up on some approaches, then the x-cty and written and checkride. So close but so far! I'm jealous I want this one in the bag and move forward. Again congrats!!
