Zane,
I don't know that Ron Krohn is a regular on BCP, but we do have a thread that's been keeping track of progress on Ron's quest to get aviation added to the New Mexico recreational use statute (RUS), at
http://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6978. Ron is Vice President of New Mexico Pilots Association and one of the founding members of our Recreational Aviation Committee (RAC) that we started up a little over a year ago. RAC is led by Larry Filener (88H), who is a regular on BCP, with assistance from others such as Dave Hamann, Ron Keller, and me. We also got quite a bit of support from RAF, with our state rep in RAF being Rol Murrow. All of these folks (except me - I just provided moral support!) were very helpful with the RUS amendment legislation.
We also heard today from another NMPA Member who lives in Arizona and is the Arizona state rep for RAF - Mark Spencer - that the AZ Governor just signed their bill amending the RUS statute to add aviation to the protected uses. Mark led that effort along with others in AZ Pilots Association and RAF.
So we're two for two in the Southwest in 2011! That's really an amazing feat! The AZ and NM associations have been cooperating and supporting each other a lot over the last year, which has helped both groups in achieving these successes.
