NMPA Fly-in May 13-15 Timburon (52NM)

New Mexico Pilots Association is sponsoring a Fly-in at Timburon (52NM), which event is also co-hosted by the Timburon Development Council (TDC), over the weekend of May 13-15. Timburon is a secluded residential community located at the south end of the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. The airport is surrounded by the community of Timburon, and the runway is paved, so Timburon is not technically a backcountry airstrip. However, there are a number of backcountry airstrips located in the vicinity of south-central New Mexico and west Texas that are within a 50-60 nm radius of Timburon, and we expect to do some fly-outs to some of those strips, provided we get owner permissions, which we're working on now.

There'll be camping on the airstrip in and amongst the ponderosa pines at near 7,000 ft elevation. For those not wanting to rough it there's also lodging available in Timburon as well as restaurants.

Timburon is surrounded on the south and west by Restricted Areas, with MOAs on the north and east. There's a narrow corridor in between the Restricted Areas via Alamagordo (ALM) allowing transit to the El Paso area ... so you'll want to study up on the Albuquerque Sectional and make sure you plan your arrival and departure to stay out of the restricted areas. With a field elevation of 6,940 ft. MSL and the warm weather that we typically get in May in the southern Rockies, make sure you plan for high density altitude operations.

For those interested in participating in the Timburon Fly-in, just go to the NMPA website at http://www.nmpilots.org, look on the Events page, and follow the link to the fly-in page. There'll be a liability waiver to read, sign, and send in.

Timburon is a beautiful mountain community and the weather in mid-May should be great. Two of our NMPA members - Bll and Bobbie Brown - live in Timburon and have organized this event along with TDC. We certainly appreciate their hospitality!

I just wanted to say thanks for posting all these NM events. It's good to see NMPA is active and doing good things. Can't wait to attend some soon. Also, it's been nice for the thought of us moving down into NM as well!

Yur welcome Tadpole ... come on down any time. We've had quite a few from Colorado and Arizona participate in our Negrito Fly-in. And a lot of us love flying to Colorado too ('specially the Durango area around the San Juans; quite a few of our members have been to Marble and loved it).

We're actually doing a couple of shared events with Colorado Pilots Association (CPA) this year. One is the Palo Duro Fly-out July 15-17, and another is the Peaks Resort/Telluride Fly-in on August 19-21. Neither is a backcountry event, but I expect we'll end up doing one or more joint NMPA-CPA backcountry events next year (Marble would be a natch, if the owners are willing to put up with us).

The New Mexico guys'n gals have developed a pretty close working relationship with the Arizona Pilots Association folks over the last six months, and we'd like to do likewise with the Utah pilots also. We've already started some preliminary discussions about setting up an annual "Four Corners Fly-in" on a rotating basis between the four states. There's tons of great airstrips and fantastic scenery within a 50-100 nm radius of the Four Corners.
