M6RV6 -

What day are you coming in? If its Tues, I might be able to meet you guys at one of the local airports and come in with you. I park at Lake Hood and know the place like the back of my hand.

You are correct on the <1200 / >2200 altitude. Merrill Segment gets really busy this time of year as well, so there will be traffic coming in sharing that same altitude and coming across. Just keep east of the power lines and you will be golden. I have only landed on 13 one time this year, so you can pretty much bet on 31, just remember to not get over the water (stay North of Gull Island) and its a short final. 31 is a right pattern (always over the houses).

Are there two planes coming together here then? There are only 2 transient parking spaces at Lake Hood, and there is almost always 1 plane there. I would strongly recommend calling some of the local businesses before you get here and ask if you can park a their places for a day or two.

Richard and Jeff over at Floats Alaska don't look like they have a full lot right now-

2,200' kicks in at mid-channel. If you're departing MRI over the water, you need 2,200 by mid-channel, and for arriving over the water you can start to let down after mid-channel. Pretty common to receive a deviation if you request one. If not and you anticipate trouble reaching altitude, there are a half-dozen other departures besides straight-out. "city high" departure lets you circle for altitude before the water. It's all in the supplement.

I didn't know about any transient parking by the terminals...? I was only aware of the two spots next to the planning building...?

Alpha parking has about a dozen transient spots shared between Lake Hood and GA arrivals at International. Requires a long taxi but worth it.

Also, sometimes if they have a vacant lease tiedown spot in the gravel tiedown rows by the strip they will put cones marked as "transient" there. Just need to look.

If you taxi all the way around the Lake and turn right just past Grant Aviation, there was about 3 rows of transient parking next to the road that goes around to the Post Office, They even have a little shack there with a Port a Potty!! :D
I know I tied my 195 up there 2 years ago.

Re: North To ALasKa

The Txpdr decided to crap out on me yesterday...had the avionics guy from Air North test it out...it turned out that it was emitting on 1085 mhz instead of the the Mode C frequency of 1090 mhz +/- 3 mhz... I'm told it was an internal adjustment screw out of wack... anyhow, we're testing it again today and hopefully fix it or else the avionic genius will lend me one that he pulled out of the HS 748 not too long ago... I take it w/o Mode C FAI/ANC would have a fit! BCT

Re: North To ALasKa

You don't need a transponder for Lake Hood. If you look at the chart there is a wedge of Class C from 1400 to 1900 north of Lake Hood, but outside that its class E above 700. I always just duck under 1400 (and above 700) and call Tower at about 3 miles north of the boat hull. I rarely use mine transponder, and I never call Approach. Coming from the north, I usually switch to Approach on 119.1 on my backup radio to listen in and put Tower on my primary radio just after passing Goose Bay. Traffic is extremely busy, yes, and it is a practice area for students coming out of Anchorage, but if you pay attention to whats going on on the radio its not bad.

Just make sure you stay east of the power lines and you will stay out of the class C.

Re: North To ALasKa

so I get the avionic engineer friend of mine to come and together we tweek the xpdr dead on 1090 mhz...sweet...then we go to test it out with this 20K computer ... we bend down to do first test 6' away from antenna and 1' below... and lone behold...there is no more antenna #-o it was there yesterday I swear but went flying into gravel strips today and wasnt there anymore... so going shopping at one of the 3 maintenance shops today to find one...they range from a TED antenna at $17 and found one, solid state with incorporated amp for $700!!

Side note...was fueling up here in Whitehorse and saw this middle age lad with a zenith 701...so I commented on it and he wasnt happy.. I was quickly corrected ..it was actually an italian made kit assembled in Tennessee....cant remember the name now but it starts with "S"... it looked pretty sharp. The lad flew it all the way up from Tennessee and was on his way to ANC... cruising at 90mph! Sounds like fun to me!

Cheers, BCT

Re: North To ALasKa

No worries on the transponder front. ANC and FAI controllers routinely deal very gracefully with no transponder airplanes. I've even gone in and out of the Charlie airspace with no transponder--just call them from 25 out and request permission. I was never denied in several of those. That was when I was parking a lot closer to ANC than to LHD, so saved a long taxi.

Alpha parking is now the transient parking for ANC/LHD combined. As noted, if there's no spot available on LHD strip, move on to Alpha.

My plane's no transponder, and I'm based at Merrill - they don't care. The only difference is that they'll ask me to report my altitude when there's a potential traffic conflict.

Re: North To ALasKa

There was a Savannah in transient parking at Merrill last night - pretty little thing, and it does look kinda like a Zenith! Was it bright yellow, with blue accents on the cowling?

BCT,

I may just miss you, as I'm going to try to leave Anchorage for Northway, then Beaver Creek and on down the AlCan at 11am tomorrow morning. Hope you have lots of fun, clear skies, and tailwinds!

DOT noway...that's too bad really... unless you go straight to TOk and we can do breakfast at Fast Eddies...if you can do that, e-mail me and I'll make sure we meet there.

Tonight was late departure...2146hr with sun right in my face...so much so that I laid down the brim of my hat and flew IFR! The views on each side were spectacular...Kluane and Mt Logan were out in clear...Outstanding... I love that set of mountains. Climbed up to FL105 and pushed straight through above the peaks...other than the view, nothing to report...the plane worked great... showing 150mph on GPS, 128 IAS... 21" /2350 with my Ipod all the way with a good'ole AC/DC tune for a perfect landing in Beaver Creek

Tomorrow off to Northway for customs and to Tok for breakfast with DOT! Then meet Ken and Santa at North Pole and lots more!

Good night all, Cheers, J-M

Re: North To ALasKa

halfway to Northway I was denied entry into Northway...They said it was bad weather, 900' OC... I was 15 miles out and no doubt could make it in especially with 6>vis... anyhow...back in Beaver Creek waiting for the ceiling to lift off and I'll be on my way. J-M

Re: North To ALasKa

BT, The weather here in North Pole is overcast and calling for rain. Once you get to To, give me a call. It will take a round 2.5 hours to get to North Pole. Once you get out of Can. you should have no problems. Talk to you when you get in Tok. Have a safe flight....

Ken in Alaska

P.S. you did get my number?
