North Western California Camping?

I have a trip coming up to the Monterey Bay Area from my home in Bend, Oregon. I was thinking about spending the night and camping about half way down. Does anyone know of a good place to stop and camp? Hopefully, somewhere where I can walk to get food so I don't have to lug all my own food and cooking gear. Any ideas?

Chester might fit the bill.

There are a couple of GOOD airports to camp at but most don't have ready access to town to forage for food. Gravelly Valley is a great place to camp (or was). Georgetown (E36) and Columbia (O22) have dedicated camping on the field with access to showers but they might be a little out of your way. Columbia has a easy hike to a gold rush mining town with restaurants and lots of gold rush history exhibits.

Another good stop would be Ranchaero CL56 (formerly O23) which is near Chico State University. Good eats around the campus. I don't know about camping on the field but they are really friendly folks there so I don't know why they would say now either. It's really a neat little airport, kind of like going back in time to the '30's.

I also know there are campgrounds very close to Trinity Center (O86) and they may even allow camping on field, call and check. It's also a short walk to town.

I have The Answer...

Dearwater International at Sierraville, CA. Dinky little strip. No one cares if you camp. A couple of restaurants and a pizza joint just a short stroll into town. And, a hippy hot springs to walk to, if you want to see a bunch of nekked old hippy chicks.

A little below Chester is another option - 2O1 Gansner field at Quincy Calif.

In case you want to cross the "Big Valley" towards the coast there a couple of small strips I used to visit.
Hayfork - Nice walk across a hanging bridge into town.
Used to eat and stay in town. Not sure the economy has allowed any businesses to stay in business.

Dinsmore is right down on the water. NOT Dunsmuir but Dinsmore.
Used to be that the trees on the approach had been cut of flat and painted white so you could approach right on down the "dinner plates" Used to land downstream and takeoff up stream.

If your bladder is up to it ya can go on down to Willows. Eat at Nancy's around the clock.
Do not know about camping, but there are motels just across the highway.
Next day ya just gotta find Mt Diablo, Mt Hamilton, vere to the right and you are on to Monterey.

I was at the hot springs a couple weeks ago - there were some hippys but there was some eye candy too, you just never know what you're going to get there :?
