Northern/Mid East CA and NW Nevada Pilots

Does anyone on this board ever get to this region? Last year there was talk of a SuperCub fly-in at Columbia, CA (O22) north of Sonora, in the foothills of the Sierras. It was cancelled for lack of interest, but it may be something we could resurrect this spring. It sounds like a cool airport, grass and asphalt runways.

I live in Reno and had planned on heading over in the 172 to camp and hang out, but then...cancelled.

I see one user from Carson City, that is about the closest. Maybe as we get more members in this area, a fly-in could become a reality. I can smell BBQ already.

I only saw photos of Columbia last year when there was talk of a Super Cub fly-in there. I still would like to go visit.

Where backcountry strips do you like to visit in this area? The cool thing about here is that you go west, you have some formidable mountains(though Lake Almanor is a neat trip even though it's paved.) You go east, you've got hundreds of miles of desert lined by fairly tall mountains to explore. North, even flatter desert like the Black Rock, best known for the Burning Man festival:

A fairly safe (gulp) place to drag it down low, pretty cool, though there can be sippy holes before summer.

With Yahoo photos, it's hard to link directly to them for some reason. Inserting the URL is about the best you can do.

NW Nevada

A great place to go in northwestern Nevada is Soldier Meadows Ranch and Lodge. It has a nice dirt strip, NVO6. Great people and really great food. Fill your tanks before you fly there. No gas, no phones, just high mountain desert. It just gotten written up in Pilot Getaways magazine.

Might have to check that out when the weather improves. I like Pilot Getaways, it's kind of a neat magazine for what it is, with their token "bush flying" section. :|
