Northwest backcountry scout

I am beginning to deal with northwest backcountry on a scout. Has anyone worked with them or familiar with their modifications in the scout.

They have been very helpful so far. If anyone can give me some info on the 31" AK tires and their relative benefits and downsides I'd appreciate it very much . I do use my airplane for some crosscountry and 50% on pavement/concrete runways.

Much thanks

If you are going to be on pavement half the time you might look into bushwheels new 10 inch wheel conversion and buffed 29 inch tire. Cheaper to replace and will last five times as long. I think they are availabel for your plane. I'm thinking about them for when my 29's wear out.

tricycles are for little girls

I don't think that you could find a better dealer to buy from. Bob Hannah treated me the absolute best a few years back on an aircraft purchase.

Get one of them to give ya a demo ride.

I also agree on the 31" Bushwheels, don't use them much on the pavement... There sure awesome in the dirt tho........

850 x 10 airtracs look like a pretty good alternative to the buffed 29's.....

J.S. , as far as the mods go that you asked about... get the V.G.'s, the flow matching of the cylinders, extended baggage, 496 in panel, baby bush tail wheel..... as for the 31's, there awesome, just don't run them less then 12 psi on pavement and they'll last a lot longer.... Set up like this, with a little practice... you'll have a plane that'll operate in and out of short strips (500' + or - depending on ability) that'll cruise at 117 kts... go for a demo ride with Bob and you'll be sold.... just my two cents worth and i'm a cub guy  Joe

Wow  8) Things I didn't know.

My son whom is 15, rides a KTM 450 EXC, and he thinks that James "Bubba" Stewert is the cats meow. I told him last year that the Hurricane wrote the book, and these youg guys could use some lessons   Mainly just ribbing him a bit. I rode an Elsinore back in 1973 and pretty much thought the same of Hannah back then.

My son kicks my a** anyway. The KTM will eat my XR600. But then again he weighs 150 and I weigh 250, so a bit of discrepency there. If I could dump 50 to 60 pounds it would make a difference I'm sure. I've rode his KTM across country a couple time. The suspension is amazing, will take up some serious mogals.

Wow  8) I'm still amazed.

I rode a Penton Jackpiner, and an Elsinore 250... Does that make me old???? Oh yeah, and a Bultaco Pursang Mark IV. I don't think I could get on a new dirt bike without a step-ladder, or if I took air like the kids do now, I'd be dead. My heart would just quit before I hit the ground.

I was a Bultaco guy, back in the day, too... If I was two or three feet in the air, I was way up there... Yup, Hannah was my hero then too..

For me in 73, it was a WR250 Husqvarna. My motorcycling Hero was Heiki Mikola. I think 73 was the first Elsie, and of course marked Japan's entry into dirt. The thing I disliked most about the Jap bikes was that the factorybikes had little to do with the bikes you and I rode, whereas the Europeans sold what they rode.
Anybody remember the little Hodaka's?

I had a couple Hodakas, remeber they all had wierd names. I had a "road Toad" and a "Wombat"
Growing up in SoCal, Hannah was my hero too later replaced by the "bad boy" Ricky Johnson. We had all the greatest cycle parks back then, Saddleback, Carlsbad, Riverside raceway, Corona, De Anza, Hungry Valley and many more... Places were a no name weekend warrior could get on the track in open practice and actually ride next to real pros. All gone now due to the change in our "liability environment" everybody turned sue crazy and between that and the value of so cal land the parks all slowly seemed to vanish  The bikes and gear might not have held a candle to todays stuff, but motocross in the '70s and early 80's was the stuff!

Anybody who even remembers the names- Bultaco, Ossa, Montesa, Maico, Sachs, Greeves, Zundapp, Rickman, Hodaka-- definitely qualifies as "old school". Back around 1970 or so, I would have KILLED for a Pursang or Sherpa S. Unfortunately I was still in junior high........

Yea, and the really amazing thing is that Hannah could have still lapped everyone else around... even on a Greeves, Bultaco Etc.... the guy was something..... and still is, in an Airplane....

I had a Super Rat and a Pursang. My roadbike was a Bridgestone. My favorite was a '68 DT1 because it ran all the time. Bob Hannah was god-like.

The AMA made a rule in 1986 that the factories had to run production bikes, after years of running "works" bikes. The privateers had no chance back then, but today they're pretty much all on the same equipment, save for a little tuning.

I raced a lot in my early twenties, and bought RM250's every few years. Through some friends, I met Roger Decoster, and he would leave tickets for us with will call at AMA National races. I always felt so cool telling the will call people that I was there for the tickets Roger Decoster left for me.

Hodaka, Jawa, Bultaco...those were names I only heard at the hill climbs. :D

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

My family didn't have a lot of money. My dirt bike was a girl's purple Schwin with a coaster brake. At least the tires were fat. As a child I wanted a motorcycle so badly, for so long, that I think it actually changed who I became as a person. Hard telling if never getting one changed me for the better or for the worse. The one kid I knew who not only had a motorcycle, but had a new one every year, ended up having sort of a shit life. I guess that's some consolation...
