Oregon180 wrote:For camping near the beach, Nehalem Bay (3S7) is really nice. There are 5 or so nice camp sites you can taxi to just south of the regular parking area. The Strip itself is paved, but when you're camping there, you're in a nice wooded area. The camp sites have Picnic tables and fire rings. Easy walk to the beach, and to Manzanita, which is a nice little town with restaurants and cafe's.

Due to logistics, not getting as much time off as I wanted, and wanting to be at JC by the 26th, Nehalem just made the overnight list for camping. Is there a fee for camping here?? Looks really nice.

Thanks again for all the input. We are really looking forward to the trip. We've had to whittle it down a little, but have decided to catch those things being left off on a separate trip in July.

Re: Northwest Gems

I found in another thread the article on the strip. It said $8.00/night. Is that still the rate.

Also, I saw Rob say in a post that June - August the fog can be relentless. Since I have no coast experience, how does a late June day usually go? For example, anyone that has been to JC can tell you a rough time frame to defrost you plane if there is frost. I guess I'm just wondering what my odds are that we'll be stuck there for a couple of days if it were to fog up.

Thanks again for all the input.

Re: Northwest Gems

Grassstrippilot,

Hard to say on the weather, the coast often fogs in when it gets hot in the Willamette Valley. July and August are the most likely months for coast fog, but that being said, we have already seen several days of fog at the coast and it seems early in the season for that.

The fog clears up real good about 1,000ft up. #-o (Recent IFR, so just had to put that in. )

The fog usually will burn off for a short time in the afternoon. If your lucky, be ready to jet. If your real lucky you might get sun all day. Keep the fingers crossed. Nehalem Bay is great!

Re: Northwest Gems

Does Nehalem Bay have tiedowns or do I need to bring my own anchors? If so, will the auger type work (I've not had much luck with them) or do I need to bring something like the Claw?

Thanks again.

Re: Northwest Gems

Hi GSP, There are tie downs, They may not be where you want, I would bring the claw system if you have room.

Re: Northwest Gems

Hey everyone,

I have a couple of last minute questions regarding a couple of the strips that I'll be visiting.

Nehalem Bay - What's the firewood situation here? Do you need to bring your own or do they sell some here? Or should we plan on using our stoves/dutch ovens this night?

Copalis Beach - For those of you that have been here, are there any markings depicting where the landing area starts/ends? Do you have to time your arrival with the tide charts? Any other advice would be appreciated. If anyone is up for joining us, we'll be in that area between Nehalem and Copalis on Wednesday of next week.

Magee - It seems like I read something in the last year or two about this strip not being open, but the Idaho Div of Aeronautics site says that it is. Have any of you done any camping here? This is most likely going to be our alternate spot since Cavanaugh Bay isn't open yet. Any info on this strip would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Northwest Gems

Copalis is a beach, it's pretty much fall air game- but be sure you're on the correct beach. The Garmin GPS database got the wrong lat/long into it some years ago, and showed Copalis beach airstrip as being south of the Copalis River outlet. It is north of it. If you're landing north on Copalis, you'll cross over the river mouth on short final.
You don't necesarily need a low tide, but it helps. I Here's a tide table website: http://saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/w ... ml#willapa
Scroll down to "Grays Harbor" and click Point Grenville, which is the nearest location to Copalis Beach, then scroll down again for date(s). It has sun & moon rise & set times also.

GSP

Magee is is open and in great shape. I landed there in late May and the IAA was planning a clean-up that following Saturday so I'm sure it's better than when I left it. There are tie downs and you may camp there as well as cabins to rent thru the forest service. easy approach and departure to the south.

Re: Northwest Gems

GSP,
I don't know for sure, but I doubt that there is fire wood stacked and ready for the taking at Nehalem Bay. With a little scavenging on the beach and in the trees you could probably get a good fire going.
Have fun
