The FAA has decided it needs more documentation to show that mechanics are "active" before they can renew their IA ticket.
I don't have a link to the NPRM but you can find it from the FAA or the AOPA site

Check Joe Norris's (from EAA) response on
www.Supercub.org. The FAA told them it was for initial issuance only, not renewals.

I saw something about this recently. The fact that it wasn't clear it was for initial issuance only is a cause for concern-- maybe in the future they will want to apply it to renewals as well. Even if it is just for initial issuance, why should an "active" (aka full time) status be required as long as the experience requirements have been met? Given the fact that it's pretty hard to make a living in aviation, there are a lot of part-time/weekend mechanics in the business, many of which are damn good. My own IA (70+ years old, specializing in owner-assisted annuals) is one of them. If they're legislated out of existance, "affordable flying" is just one step closer to being a thing of the past.

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process...

With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

Follow the money... Our FAA would never try and get rid of the small guys to stack the deck in favor of corporate owned FBO's and service centers. It's all about "safety."
Just like Ted Stevens would never take away the bypass mail from the smaller airlines in AK and hand it over to the big guys... Oh wait, never mind...
