WOW what a cool airport. Looks like another one I need to visit.

Good luck on keeping it open.

Wow - what a bummer. I did my "shortfield" practice at Oceano when getting my private out of SLO in '94. I will definitely try to make it down for this.

Re: Oceano (L52) May 8

Gonna try to make this one. I go down to Pismo every year with my Sand Toys and always wanted to fly down. Emmet do you want to meet up somewhere South and fly in together?

Re: Oceano (L52) May 8

I wish I was going to be in town, probably either still in Saudi (too early for a vacation) or, with any luck, at Flight Safety for a new type rating (they've only been talking about a new airplane for 10 years....

I rode my bicycle to Oceano where I pumped gas, worked the unicom and flew my parents 172 when I was still in high school. Then I got my drivers license....

When you guys go there, find a way to get into town (Pismo) and go to a restaurant called "The Cracked Crab". They do a big family size seafood boil (steam) where they put a bunch of different fish, veggies, sausage, etc. into a big steam kettle then dump it out family picnic style on a paper covered table. Dee-licious!

Re: Oceano (L52) May 8

From AOPA's website:
Pilots protest developer’s vision for Oceano Airport
A Los Osos developer who hopes to see the Oceano County Airport closed so that it can be redeveloped met with substantial opposition at a meeting on March 17. And, while he attempted to keep out most of the pilots who showed up, he didn’t succeed in barring AOPA. Developer Jeff Edwards held a “public” meeting in Grover Beach, Calif., to float the idea of closing Oceano County and leasing the property for a variety of commercial uses. San Luis Obispo County, which owns the airport, has said it has no plans to sell or lease the property. Read more >>

Maybe you folks made a difference?

He says he is going to continue with the meetings, fortunately the County Board of Supervisors and the Airport Management don't seem to be interested in his proposals.

Thats great news, I'd hate to see that one closed.
Best way to get to the Cracked Crab is walk up the beach. You'll have a good appetite when you arrive. About 30 minutes walking.

Looks like friends of the airport (whoever they are) have made up a pretty nice website:

Oceano is a neat place, I've camped there a few times. Too bad I have a couple of other commitments that day or I'd really like to make it down.

Re: Oceano (L52) May 8

It is walking distance to plenty of food, but I've never eaten at a rib joint there. I have walked the 2 miles up the beach to the town of Pismo and eaten at the Cracked Crab which I do recommend. And I've eaten at a few other places close to the airport which were OK also. You can rent an ATV and cruise the beach and a few other fun activities with a close walk also.

Re: Oceano (L52) May 8

First pax I ever took up was a short little trip from Santa Ynez to Oceano. The landing was...long and not good...should have gone around. I'll never forget it.

Cool little place.
