Off airport lake Powell

Anyone know of some easy off airport strips near Lake Powell? Or even some remote on airport recommendations in the area?

Re: Off airport lake Powell

Marble Canyon (L41) is close to Lake Powell and kind of neat, though not off airport. I once flew in, thumbed a ride down to Vermillion Cliffs with my fishing rod and a backpack, hiked down Soap Creek Canyon and caught about a thousand trout in the Colorado. It was one of those unforgettable days that life rewards us each with only a handful of.

Cliff Dwellers is also close, but I'm unsure about getting permission to land there. There is a Lodge, and I imagine that they welcome anyone who is likely to stay, dine or spend money there.

L41 is a hoot. Best way to "penetrate the SFAR" and not get in trouble.
Shame the old classic breakfast/pilot friendly restaurant just burned to the ground.

Re: Off airport lake Powell

Does it have to be on the lake? Cal Black is just a few miles up the Colorado past the confluence (San Juan) On the south side. Probably the closest gas to the lake outside of Page. Hite is across the river and east on the north side. Both are 'airports' so although you didn't define 'easy' they probably fit the bill :D From Cal black there are several off field strips within a 15 mile radius . Nokai dome is about 11 miles south, Zahn camp a few more. There is a strip on the Mesa between the Colorado and the San Juan just west of Zahns, but I haven't found anyone else who knows of it, so can't vouch for legality on that one, have coordinates if you're interested in exploring the issue tho... Nokai and Zahns are widely described on the net, try UBCP... I would call them very easy, but airplanes have been dinged on both. The strip on the Mesa has wide open approachs and is long, but narrow and soft...

Take care, Rob

Re: Off airport lake Powell

Alright so We just added another person so for safety sake I'm going to ammend this to on-airport. The three I'm considering are L41 (Marble Canyon) U96 (Cal Black) and U07 (Bullfrog basin) We're planning on getting provisions in page and camping on airport in one of the three aforementioned airports. Proximity to the water (whether it be powell or colorado river) would be a huge bonus, as would them allowing us to camp on field or having campgrounds nearby. Any suggestions with regards to these? or more info on camping at L41?

Thanks so much!

Re: Off airport lake Powell

L41 would not lend itself to camping at the airport. But Lees ferry has a great campground. Easy to get over there in most cases.
The question is....do you want to be by the river or the lake?
River side is hotter. Lake is much higher elevation.
I am biased from overnight trips to L41.....the other strips have been just to say we landed there.
Google map the spots and get a better feel for the proximity to water, then post some more questions.
Either way it will be fun.

Re: Off airport lake Powell

Re Cliff Dwellers Lodge. I used to go there quite a bit before the special flight rules went into effect. At that time there was a tie down area at mid field with a couple of cables and room for 2 or 3 aircraft. I never asked for permission, and no one ever said anything. It was mostly used by a rafting operation based just on the other side of the hiway. They used to bring rafters back to the strip using 206s. The fishing on the river at and just upstream of Soap Creek is good to excellent, depending on the water level, which is governed by the release rate at the dam. Its about a 45 minute hike in each direction. Just start at the tie down area and head directly towards the river. When I visited there was a motel and convenience store along the hiway about a quarter mile east where you could buy fishing licenses. There is one trick to getting down to the river. About half way down there is (dry) waterfall of 25 ft or so. The way around this is a trail the beings a couple of hundred yards upstream on the W side. It's narrow trail cut into the canyon wall. A short distance after the falls you come to a area where the canyon wall has partially collapsed. You can then scramble down back to the creek bed. The big attraction here is the fishing. It obviously gets some use by locals, but other than that seems to be largly undiscovered. One caution; you would not want to try this trip when there is a threat of significant percip.

U96 has Mogas (noneth) and 100LL and a crew car, the marina is about 10 miles away. High priced marina convenience store food there and alot of boats. Carl at U96 is a real good guy and young just got married I don't think he'd mind if you camped on field, not much attraction there other than gas IMO.

Bullfrog basin is closed. It had X's on it a month ago. The same thing is said about Zanes Camp. Been discussed here several times
