Sick! You do a nice job of conveying the spatial ambiance with the wide angles and the crisp audio. I love that frosty spinner scene.

That was great video. A friend of mine built a log cabin on Monumental Creek just upstream from Simonds. He was flown to and fro in a 206 that could land on the private property. I've flown over those airstrips but only landed a Cabin Creek.

Very cool vid. It got the juices going. Can't wait to get up there next week. T-5 days and counting until launch time.

He has some entertaining stuff, non-flying related too. I saw his video on demolition derbies - hilarious, and he has some clips on his own website..

Re: Ohio Bush Pilots: Idaho

That was a very poor example of how to land Mile High, he left himself no options once he made the choice to land on the last part uphill in a turn. This is not how it should be done!

As a newcomer to back country flying, I'd like you to elaborate a bit on what you disliked about the landing. I've flown over mile high, and turning up hill seems like it would be a good way to slow down quickly. I did notice the right wing tip was pretty close to dragging on the turn.

Re: Ohio Bush Pilots: Idaho

At about 2:10 into the video, I was wondering if we were going to get to see a "dead stick takeoff" without the pilot on board.

Re: Ohio Bush Pilots: Idaho

It is easy enough to make a straight in landing at Mile High, he left all the normal landing area behind him and landed in a turn going uphill towards a point of no return should he have elected to go around (like he should have done) after screwing it up so bad. Mile High need not be a one way strip like he made it into.

Not sure what all the tail walking of the airplane was about once he was on the ground, never had to do anything like that myself there. I was thinking maybe in Ohio because it is so flat that he did not know you can taxi up and down hills :)

This guy needed some instruction on how to land it properly for sure.

Re: Ohio Bush Pilots: Idaho

Well Mr. Miller, I'm flattered you watched my video.

BUT to set the record straight:

1. Southeastern Ohio, where I live is far from flat. If you want me to give you GPS coordinates to fly in without ever touching this land with a camera on your tail and let me critique your landing I will.
2. All the literature says not to land on the first 540 feet of mile high where the ruts are--admittedly I know i did not land on "19" but that was my choice. In my eyes I did not "screw it up" at all and was in control the entire time and put it right where i wanted.
3. If you want to give me flying lessons I'll teach you how to edit videos better.

Re: Ohio Bush Pilots: Idaho

I don't care how you do it but others may think this is the approach to take to land Mile High. I am just concerned that someone that does not have the skill or .... may not pull it off. If you read what I wrote about options, you left yourself none once you turned uphill. I have made plenty mistakes flying but when I can point out a problem that is obvious I will.

Come on out and I will show you what I know about off airport flying, this is not a offer for instruction, but you can follow me around for a day or so and we will have a hoot.

Re: Ohio Bush Pilots: Idaho

Mauleguy,

Your approach to trying to help us "flatlanders" not screw up Mile High was rude and harsh and not helpful. If you could be more specific and less critical maybe you could prevent new pilots to the backcountry from making errors in judging landing zones. I thought this site was about sharing information and helping each other out. :|

Re: Ohio Bush Pilots: Idaho

the landing to me looked pretty good, and fairly safe given the territory. not being an expert on mile-high as i've never landed it, looked quite in control. one of the best instructors in that area, and lives in the area ,lands on the top, and lets the uphill slow him down...he's done mile-high about 80 times so far...in about every bird known...

so i say to greg, good job! i especially like your landing at dewey-moore as i have done that one, and yours was superb. glad you came out and got to sample idaho...it is very addicting!
