Ohio Bush Planes do West Virginia

This was the Ohio Bush Plane's wild and wonderful West Virginia fly-out tour after our record breaking (85 airplanes) fly-in. Planes came and went durring the week, but I think 19 participated at some point. jg

I lived in WV for 13 years and moved back to PA from there in 2007. I also bought and flew my Cessna 150 down there. I flew all over WV, OH, and KY while flying out of Mallory (WV12) in South Charleston.

What WV airfields did the Ohio Group visit and camp at this year?

pa150.
I can't name nearly all the places we visited (some wouldn't have names?), but here are some. Parkersburg class D ( landing on the brand new Ohio Bush Planes special grass patch); Scott Island on the Kanawha River; Fayetteville (5 dollar Frank's); Rainelle, upper and lower; A few uncharted strips south of Beckley; the Herold strip at Craigsville; maybe the coolest place was in a hollow near Diana; Stephen Coonts strip; Bob Armstrong's High Rock strip; Buck Renker's Indian Motorcycle museum; a couple strips near Burlington, one was two nights camping at the Millstone BBQ; several mountain top ridge strips; and finally Heaven's Landing, where we rented cabins for a final wash and relaxation (highly recommend this place). You should have been with us?? jg

Re: Ohio Bush Planes do West Virginia

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately I haven' been on the BCP site for a a long time and was surprised to see the post about the WV trip. Most of the fly-in destinations listed here are in the PNW.

Except for the general areas you described, I haven't got a clue about most of fields you landed at. I was just getting back into flying after being away from it for 10 years when I bought my plane and hadn't yet built enough confidence to try landing at out of the way places. A stock 100 hp Cessna 150 can't get in and out of as many places as the Maules and Huskys most of you guys fly.

I knew of and visited Island Airfield in the Kanawha River East of Charleston, (never landed there myself), but I don't know where any of the other places you went to are.

I still have friends in the Cessna 150-152 Club who live in Ohio, one out of Madison County (UYF), and one based at Clermont County (I69).

Graham is well within range for a day trip from RDG where I'm based. Maybe that would be the best place to find all the Eastern members of the back country crowd.

Are you guys planning anything else soon?

The C-150 would of worked just fine at most of the WV strips that we went to.

Re: Ohio Bush Planes do West Virginia

After watching Bill Tracey's video I was able to locate some of the places you visited. The only one I've been to is Fayette (WV59).

While I was living there I made it my goal to land at every public airport in the State of WV. I did that and now I'm working on PA.

During my time as a WV pilot I landed at some grass strips; Newlon (I41), Leon (W07), and New Martinsville (75D) are all familiar to me.

When I first bought my 150 in 2004, I had a 120 hours total time. I went over 1100 hours this year.

I'll start hanging around this forum more. I'm always looking for new people to see, places to go, and things to do.

I'm 69 now but I'm in reasonably decent shape for a geezer!

Hopefully I'll meet some of the Eastern BCP folks one of these days. :D

Re: Ohio Bush Planes do West Virginia

some of the places like buldozer conrer and harveys mt would be a little tight for a 150 with all your camping gear and and fuel..

I had a blast, thanks john and bill and everyone else. You two are going to have to come up north for the WAD flyin next year!
