Oil temp/oil press

On a recent flight back from Nevada in level flight @ 9500' my oil pressure dropped to 34 psi as my oil temp rose to 204 deg f. OAT was 30 deg f . This was a bit alarming as the sun was going down and landing options were limited. 20-30 mins later the temp went back down to 185 and the pressure climbed back up to 40-41 psi. Green is 30-60 psi.

Anybody had similar situation(s) and what did you do to resolve them? New EI gauge and I believe it's accurate. 20 hrs on rebuilt engine ECI cylinders good compressions, Not a non congealing cooler. I'm seeing the oil temp all over the place from 185-200 up and down. I'm suspecting the Verna-therm.

Re: Oil temp/oil press

could be the vernatherm, I had the same problem 2 years ago and a different vernatherm did the trick. Take it out and look very carefully at the seat. You will see a ring were it seats, if the ring doesn't go all the around it's not seating properly

Re: Oil temp/oil press

I think is was that the oil cooler was congealed. Seen it alot with Continentals with front mount coolers. Try a piece of tape across the middle of the cooler and see what happens on a short flight.

Re: Oil temp/oil press

Ok I replaced the Vernatherm and It fixed the problem. Oil temp stays between 165 to 175. oil pressure stays between 42 to 46 psi.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Re: Oil temp/oil press

It's like a thermostat. It is open and lets cold oil bypass the oil cooler and when the oil warms it expands and forces the oil to divert to the oil cooler as the oil makes the rounds in the engine.

If you're interested in learning more about your aircraft engine, I strongly recommend picking up a copy of the "Skyranch Engineering Manual" written by John Schwaner. I think you could read that book a dozen times and still learn something each time! :)

I'd settle for directions to the closest hot springs. Then that burger & a beer or 2, :D Starting to get demanding aren't I?
Got 28 hrs on her now used 1 qt of oil in the last 12 hrs is that ok?
