I'm headed out this morning to look at an 180HP/172 (1957) that has a 1800SMOH engine. The plane looks in decent shape but has older Collins radios in it. I think they are VHF 251's. Have only seen grainy photos with no equiptment list. I have only been flying in areas where basic unicom is used for nearly the last couple of decades, are these radios still useable for heavy traffic areas? The plane is not for me, and will be headed to the west coast where there is considerably more controlled airspace. I'm just the guy that's going to look at the plane to take pictures and look at the log books.
I do know that a few places I have flown require a 6 digit (such as 123.075) frequency and I believe these radios only have 2 spaces after the decimal.
The high time and possiblity of have to OH the engine and upgrade the plane might make this plane a money pit. 2913TT 1800SMOH on an O-360 with Hatzel CS prop. Prop was last overhauled in 2010 @1544 hrs. Asking $40K which I think is high considering the high time SMOH engine. The other plus is it has a STOL cuff but not sure which brand, he said it's a 'Doyn' STOL conversion, but I have never heard of it.
