Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: Oops-FAA ADMINISTRATOR ARRESTED FOR DUI

Not to jump on the DUI/DWI debate (although the goventment keeps lowering the standard BAC for intoxication so they can arrest more folks). At issue is the FAA made it their business to take away medicals due to DUI. Now, while I don't have any statistical data to back me up, I have lots of ancedotal information. I learned to fly from a hard drinking, bar brawling, womanizing SOB - and he was my best friend. I misspent my youth hanging around with the motleyest bunch of hard living pilots you'd ever care to meet. Cattle rustlers, smugglers, moonshiners ... guys you'd go to if you wanted someone paved under a road. Most of 'em are gone now, and my best friend, well, he drank himself to death.

They guys wore DUIs like a badge o honor. But never, ever, did any of them get into an airplane under the influence. Not even a little bit. Not once. And, I can only imagine what they'd have done if someone tried. Probably save a life but you'd get an a** whipping. There are very few incidents of flying under the influence (FUI?). I just isn't a major problem. The FAA was overstepping their bounds as part of the nanny state's social engineering effort. So, looks like Babbit was hoist by his own petard. Hope he enjoys the view.

Oh, and by the way, no, DUI is not the reason for my own FAA medical issues...it high blood pressure brought on by meddlesome playground bullies that become Feds.

Best,

The issue I see here is the double standard that most of these guys expect and abuse. Politicians, Movie shits, and the lot will climb up on their soapbox ( not mine), and preach about the atrocities of the common man. They tell everybody who will listen, how we are a bunch of misfits that will not play by the RULES and need to have a new set of RULES to keep us inline. And then...... one of the mongrels does some of the same stupid shit we do and gets caught and the media starts a pity party. "Had to be bad parents, bullies, coworkers, wife, mistress, or some other transparent fart that caused them to go off". AS for my oponion of them; Turn about fair play, get in line, take your ass whippin' and shut-up.

In your opinion. It depends how much. Just a little is ok IMO.

I hope he stays on as administrator, pays his fine, gets a suspended drivers license, undergoes diversion therapy and is forced to follow FAA rules to re-instate his medical. He may come out a better man for it. Most of us have turning points in our lives. DUI's, busted marriages, getting fired, etc. It will either make a man (or woman) out of you or you'll blame the world for your woes and settle into bitterness and anger. Hopefully for this guy it's the former.
