Optimistic Homebuilder

This fellow's enthusiasm is admirable. I feel a little bad for him though.

Re: Optimistic Homebuilder

The news babe said that he got all his good info by searching the internet. I did some extra searching and have concluded that he spends all his available time monitoring this forum.

We should be very carefull about what we advise here. Hate to be held accountable for any injury on his part.

Re: Optimistic Homebuilder

It's unique because it's completely detachable?? Thats an understatement! A tailwheel might be better than the camber in that castering nose wheel he's using. Also I think 4000rpm is a bit high for his hand carved wooden prop.

Good luck to him tho! Ambition like I've never seen!

It looks like something McGyver built to escape a mountaintop terrorist camp.

I wonder where he got his primary insruction. Do most countries have an equivalent to our FAA.

Don't laugh.......remember the Wright Brothers were crazy too. Also, if you get a big enough engine to power your project, the kitchen table can be made to fly...if only for a little while.

Hey, I think the guy is a genius. If we watch his video enough and pass it around, he may become a "super you tuber" and make enough advertising dollars to buy himself a new carbon cub!

Re: Optimistic Homebuilder

There's a follow up video. The Kenyan government might not let him fly it.

I hope that these videos generate enough interest that knowledgeable experts will give him a hand and he eventually gets it airworthy and into the air.

God speed, Gabriel Nderitu!

Re: Optimistic Homebuilder

EAA should do a goodwill program and fly him to Oshkosh, put him through the Sportair workshops, give him a set of plans for a Zenith 701 or 750. Send him back with the knowledge he needs to build a worthwhile airplane. Would make for great press and Gabriel might actually achieve his dream.

This really is a great idea. I wonder what I would take to make this happen. This guy has our desires, dreams and ambition, but not the funds or knowledge. I really feel sorry for the guy and realize how blessed we are.

Re: Optimistic Homebuilder

This is EXACTLY what EAA is all about. They should do just what was previously suggested by Bugs66, invite him to Oshkosh and put him through the workshops, give him some tech help, and put him in touch with the closest EAA chapter if there is one in his corner of the planet. EAA and general aviation as a whole would get so much mileage and good publicity out of helping this guy. I am sure this would make a great mainstream TV special or !($*% reality show (ugh!).

Anyone who has seen Steve Wittman's early designs, or any of Chris Heintz's designs, can vouch that an airplane does not always have to be pretty to fly safely. The Goodyear Inflat-o-plane, that Italian ducted fan flying barrel, and plenty of others come to mind. Hell, look at 2/3 of the 1920-1930 large British biplane fighters and bombers, and those were designed by airplane people!

Re: Optimistic Homebuilder

I posted the suggestion on Oskhosk365 so hopefully some EAA brass will consider it. I think it would be a great story to follow from beginning to end. I bet some sponsors would pony up too.

Re: Optimistic Homebuilder

He reminded me of this guy (anybody NOT seen this already?)

Hopefully he will be able to rack up more landings than this poor guy. Remember: fly it all the way to the ground, and don't flare too soon.
