Oregon Aero Cushion

Anybody flying with the Oregon Aero portable cushion? I've used their headset comfort kits for years but never tried one of these. My seat in my plane is basically a sling seat with a cushion sewn on. After 2 hours my butt is sore and the JC trip is 8! Just trying to get a feeler for the $200 price tag.

For those of us who are vertically challenged, how much vertical lift does it give you?

I think they have 3 different heights. 1",2",3" Don't forget the back lumbar support.

Joey - I have an extra one for my back seat I won't need for the trip to JC. You can try it out on a long flight!

Re: Oregon Aero Cushion

I have been in the construction industry bor over 40 years. In some cars if I drive for over two hours I get pains going down the underside of my thigh. Some times the right and some times my left. Same problem in the 182.

On the way up to Everett, WA about seven years ago I stopped at Scappoose http://www.airnav.com/airport/KSPB (3.85 for fuel) to talk to Oregon Aero about reapolstering a the pilot seat. Told them about my bad back. One thousand bucks per seat. Ouch. They said to try a 1" or 2" cushon to put on my existing seat. I like the 1" (with the 2" I could not reach the flap handle)(easy flap here we go).

They said to buy the 1" for a hundred bucks, fly on up to Everett and if I did not like it they would give me my money back on the return trip. I have been using it ever since and no back or leg problems.

Get it and you will not regret it.

Re: Oregon Aero Cushion

I have a 2" Oregon Aero cushion - - really good, but pricey. I also have custom built Oregon Aero seats in a Mooney - - even better and even more pricey!

But, you can get most all the advantages of OA cushions for a lot less if you don't mind doing a bit of work. OA uses memory foam in their cushions. This can be purchased under several brand names, Confor, Tempurfoam, and is also known as NASA foam etc. In my glider I used a pad of green (extra firm) memory foam. I would recommend the extra firm if you are making a pad or cushion yourself. The extra firm will soften and "flow" to conform to your body just like the softer, less dense versions . . . just takes a bit longer. The extra firm also provides more support and impact protection in a high G event that might otherwise cause spinal injury.

If you do decide to roll your own, memory foam shouldn't be used bare, it needs to be covered to protect it from abrasion and UV damage. If you are covering it with upholstery, it will look better if you glue on a thin 1/4 or 1/2" layer of cheap polyfoam over the Confor - - use 3M spray adhesive (77 or 90) for this. Confor cuts, shapes or trims well with either a hot wire knife, band saw, or old electric knife you "borrow" from the kitchen.

Re: Oregon Aero Cushion

I have two Oregon Aero seats with lumbar support in my Maule, and they have made a huge improvement in my comfort level on flights over 1 hour.

I use the 1 inch seat, and it gives me some added visibility over the nose without putting my head against the headliner. The 2 and 3 inch seats would work for a pilot under 5' 7" or so.

Re: Oregon Aero Cushion

I just purchased a piece of the 3-layer confor foam from Jim Fix while I was at Oshkosh a couple of years ago. I pulled out the faom that was in the seats and slid this 3-layer foam in....best thing I ever did. Lot cheaper than OA also. Yeah, I fly therefor I am a cheap bastard. LOL

Re: Oregon Aero Cushion

Thanks for the link! I figured there was cheaper options besides OA out there.
