Orientation Low vs. High

High Altitude Orientation Low Altitude Orientation

Altitude is life Airspeed is life
Vertical space is ample Vertical space is limited
Horizontal space is ample Horizontal space is limited
Pull on the elevator in all turns Pull on the elevator wings level with zoom reserve airspeed
Stall and spin recovery possible Stall, spin, skidding spin, and slipping spin are all fatal
Accelerate in ground effect to Vx or Vy as appropriate Accelerate level in low ground effect until obstructions require pitch up
Climb out at Vy Climb just over any obstruction that can't be rudder turned around
Limited bank turn to heading using instruments Energy management turn of 1 g at whatever bank angle necessary to capture target
Maintain altitude in turn Law of the roller coaster. Use potential energy of altitude in vertical space available
Climb over the mountains All mountain flying, every minute, is maneuvering flight
Pull on yoke in downdraft to maintain altitude Push on yoke in downdraft to fly through down air quickly
Push on yoke in updraft to maintain altitude Pull on yoke in updraft to stay in up air longer
GPS direct Use ridge lift to get up in drainage system
Wind management only Consider both wind and down drainage egress
Left turn in pattern Wind management in pattern as well as TO and Land
Coordinated turns to maintain heading Bracket target between legs with dynamic proactive rudder
Aileron to level wing in gusts and on short final Rudder to level wing in gusts and on short final. If target is tightly
bracketed, wing cannot bank.

Medium level turn of more than 1 g. Energy management turn using vertical space ...........................................................available.
Maintain altitude everywhere..............What does the airplane want to do?
Stall/spin recovery is possible..............Either stall or spin, skidding or slipping, is fatal.
Climbout at Vy....................Climb just over the obstruction and down drainage egress.
Pitch up to Vx or Vy as appropriate. Almost never appropriate. Zoom reserve ...................................................... airspeed in low ground effect as long as possible.
Control load factor with limited bank. Load level wing only. Unload wing in turns.
Over the mountains flying. All mountain flying is maneuvering flight.
Pull yoke in downdraft to maintain altitude. Push yoke in downdraft to fly through .....................................................................quickly.
Push yoke in updraft to maintain altitude. Pull yoke in updraft to stay in it longer.
