Mike might be right, but here is my camp at OSH a few years ago. Two place plane, three tents, four guys, plus the big tarp over the wing??

Camping guidelines vary depending on where you camp. It's different for showplane, homebuilt, and general aviation (North 40) camping. Here are the GA camping guidelines: http://airventure.org/planning/aircraft_camping.html

I'll be in homebuilt camping this year.

Re: Osh Kosh 2011

Definitely camp if you can. Last time we were with the 180 there we camped in Vintage, which is a great spot to be. Pretty much right in the middle of everything. We could sit under the wing and watch the air show. North 40, where I ended up with my Dad in my old Citabria, is a lot farther away.

Walking through the Warbird area as the sun is rising or setting will give you goose bumps. Another awesome memory is walking back to our plane in the evening through the line of Staggerwings past the Theater in the Woods and just happening upon a talk by Burt Rutan about his then-new space program.

I don't think we would have had those experiences if we hadn't been camping.

Patrol Guy,

I said the RULE is two tents. I also noted that they don't seem too anal about enforcing at least some of the camping rules. Just DO NOT bring a styrofoam cooler.....

And, the only rules I'm familiar with are Vintage camping.....hanging out in the North 40 is yuppie-ville.... :D

Re: Osh Kosh 2011

I'm just wondering if I should make reservations for Scholler as a backup, or plan to park and hike in to meet and camp with BCP friends.

I've got a car reserved. At the very least I can sleep sitting up in the front seats. Dad and I did that once. #-o

Re: Osh Kosh 2011

Zane,

You will have a blast. I've been there about ten times in the last 13 yrs. I camped under the wing and in an RV and Airstream. I never had a bad time (even last year when we got flooded out). There is plenty of shuttle buses and trams. Make sure you bring rain gear, it will rain at some point through the week and rain gear is one of the most overlooked items.

The sea plane base should be saved for that day of unwinding and relaxing. Your blood pressure will drop as soon as you get there. If I go this year you and your dad are welcome under my wing, but I must warn you, it is a Maule. We Maule types generally like to lay low around here!

With any luck I'll see you there.

Re: Osh Kosh 2011 - Roll call

How are we doing on this?

Will probably be rolling solo, driving in from Milwaukee.

Re: Osh Kosh 2011

We will probably arrive Fri eve. Surprisingly, this is the event of the summer for the kids. Being in the 206 ('73 model) we will park on the North 40. We will camp in the trees in the Vintage area. Vintage rules!! There is a little known group of folks, known as the "Friends of the Red Barn" that will give you a ride anywhere on the field, free of charge. I always stop by the Red Barn and offer a generous donation to the Vintage Group as a gratitude. We are part of a group known as the "Metro Warbirds". Anyone is welcome, they cook b-fast and dinner on site. Usually around $5 for B-fast and $10 for dinner. Usually the group is parked south of row 120 or so. I varies every year. You can find us by looking for the very sophisticated camp and the loud music and laughter from the members.
I hope that we can get together as a group. Last year I was offered a demo in the Carbon Cub the same day as the BCP get together. Sorry (not too much) that I missed meeting the great people from the BCP.

Maybe its just the barnyard in me but i liked staying in the barnyard right accross from the ultralight barn. Give someone a little cash and set up wherever you please. Thought it was real handy. Do they still do that and anyone else camped there? doug Last time i was there was 2004.

Doug, sounds like you're referring to Relleumdats (Stadmueller spelled backwards) west of the Ultralight barn. I've been camping there for years and plan to again this year. Usually in a back corner. A bit more freedom there than at Camp Scholler (which of course can have it's down sides depending on what you like.) I'm planning on being there Sunday - Wednesday morning, then heading over to New Holstein to join the Supercub.org bunch.

Re: Osh Kosh 2011

If flying in on the East side Madison Wi. or Chicago is cheaper, drive up to New Holstein And camp with the sc guys, call sj for details... they have a bus that goes to OSH every morning, and returns in the evening.. Personally I would never camp any where else, Great bunch....

Re: Osh Kosh 2011

I hope to fly in on Friday, July 22 and camp in Vintage with my '65 C180 until Wednesday morning and then head over to New Holstein with the supercub guys. I haven't flown in to Oshkosh for probably 10 years but have airplane camped there in the past with the J-3 or C-175 and always had a good time. Would like to meet any guys from the site, as I have always tried to get to the Caveman flyin but so far haven't been successful. Hope to catch Karl's presentation Tuesday morning. Talked to him on the phone a few years ago, but have never met him.

They have wifi hotspots available. Worked for me last year, but did not cover the entire site. Here is a post to read:

Re: Osh Kosh 2011

Zane:I hope that work does not prevent you from going, this is a definite bucket list item. We went for the week in 2005, camping under the wing. We bought a beater bicycle from another camper and that was huge as you can walk forever. People just leave them when they leave and thrift stores recycle them for next year.'

First picture was our cheap K=Mart tent after the drenching. While sitting in the tent drinking "J" champagne to celebrate, a "almost" tornado went thru, high winds and tons of rain. Everything soaked but had a couple sheets that were in the plane and dry. Picture #3 is drying things out. Next am there were lots of bent aluminium in the dumpsters. Upon returning home we went to REI and bought a quality tent!!! Would definitely camp again under the wing. Only other option for us would be a motorhome which can be rented but might be more hassle. The friendship among campers is awesome. Good luck.

Zane, I'll be flying to OSH from Denver on the 24th. If you need a ride from anywhere, just let me know. I'd love to have another set of eyes during the arrival. I'll be in the N40, only because I bought too "new" an airplane.
