Re: Ouch

With values dropping, I wonder how many forgot to tie down the plane before the storm. [-X

Re: Ouch

What the hell do they tie those planes with back east kite string? They said the winds were 55 and tore apart airplanes and buildings
WTF that's a normal Nevada windy day.

I guess the big bad wolf must have lived back there, I guess he could huff and puff and blow your house down.

Here's an old thread with some links.

I found another one recently, but the link is on my computer at home (I'm at work right now).

I

I weathered a storm in Starbuck, Minnesota with winds at 102 MPH. My Maule was tied down facing the southwest. Early morning storm came up about 3:00am. I and girlfriend were sleeping in the tent under the wing. The wind completely destroyed my tent, but stayed staked down and the cover protected us from the heavy rain. Friends in their camping trailer next to us were afraid the camper would blow over on us. Airplane rode the storm just fine and never moved at all.

Next morning while surveying the damage, we found chairs, coolers and tables blown across the ground and in the lake a quarter mile away. Fortunately it happened early in the camping weekend and my airplane was the only one there.

Owned a 182 in 1993 and was camped there when a hail storm came up, again early morning hour. Large hail stones about baseball size and frozen clusters of 3 pelted the airplane and my tent. Damage was so severe that the insurance company totaled the airplane. It had dings all over the top surfaces. The airplane flew just fine. After all, they put dimples in golf balls to make them fly faster and farther.

Took the insurance check and bought my Maule.

Re: Ouch

A big blow came through Central Idaho on Monday night. Here's a shot of some damage at Orofino (S68). I know the guys that own the Cherokee. Hope they had it insured. Gusts of around 70 were recorded. VERY unusual for that neck of the woods hence all the damage. More pics here: http://www.clearwatertribune.com/Late_Breaking_News.htm

Re: Ouch

Yeah, it has been a bit breezy here in Idaho the last 2 1/2 days (non stop). I was craning out at the airport today, and the ScareWest commuter plane (Brasilia I think?) was landing at LSA speeds, he had a good 30 to 40 right down the runway, his crab angle on entering the pattern was awesome, his approach took him right over me, We bagged it yesterday and today on the crane work, before something got broke or someone got hurt. I saw 4 or 5 interstate signs blown down, right at the weak link they have for crashes, the bolts just shear off! I'm glad my bird is safe in the hangar :D

Re: Ouch

I recently had my airplane tied down outside at KTTA, Sanford, NC. This is the crappy tie down system they use. I had to move my airplane for other reasons, but I doubt if I'll be going back because I don't want their airplanes blowing into mine. When I was there, I tossed their chains aside and used my own ropes to tie my airplane down properly. These are pictures of a couple of the planes on their ramp. Most are tied down like this.

These tiedown pictures are a insurance claim(if there is any) waiting to happen.

Re: Ouch

The first two hooks shown are slip hooks. The narrow parallel sided hook notch is intended to slip over a chain link (think doubling the chain back over itself and then attaching the hook over a link to shorten the effective chain length). The last photo shows a slip hook. For this application, I'd consider both sub-optimal

Re: Ouch

I use bike-binder straps I got from Harbor Freight or somewhere. I didn't trust the open eyes on the ends so I cut them off & use shackles instead.

Don't use them el cheap-o bike straps - Use 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch (for boats white with green stripe) rope from hardware store . Anything smaller will just snap and brake . Tie down around Strut as well as tiedown hook. I had 182 blow over with what you described with strong gust of wind. Those "S" or hooks on end of chains will pull out straight or break > No Thanks . I make my own tiedowns -write me and I'll send pictures of "how to make " ---- "Quality isn't cheap -it's priceless". Bill Reid [email protected]
