I was just curious how many acres in your plot of land? In the midwest, what is commonly known as a section is 640 acres and I know quarter sections (160 acres) are common terminology in the west. It looks like an interesting area, quite different than either of my back yards. It should be a fun place. Steve

My barren shithole is a section. 640 acres. 1 glorious mile by 1 glorious mile! :D

Actually, it's even bigger than that. It's impossible to perfectly map squares onto the surface of a sphere. So, sections are never exactly 640 acres. According to earthpoint.us, my section is 644 acres. Can you believe it! I got FOUR acres for FREE! Woo hoo!!!

If you don't mind me asking, approximately how much does a section cost in your area?

So the mountain flying schools should actually be in Nevada....

Watch a few of Coyote Ugly's videos, and ask yourself what would happen if the uninitiated tried to follow in his footsteps...

Well it sounds like everyone is braggin about how big it is and how much they have! [-X
If I remember my Alaskana,
If Alaska cut itself in to two pieces it would make Texas the 3rd biggest state =D>
And if Alskas cut itself up into 3 pieces at low tide it would make Texas the 4th biggest state :D
Not sure how that would work with the mountains tho?? #-o

Done most of mine there FWIW, albeit in a different types of aircraft than we're discussing here. Nevada has not only a lot of real live mountains, but the real live weather to go with them. Heat-related micro-meteorology, wind-related orographic phenomena, more extreme density altitude thrown in during the summer than most anywhere.

Most importantly, the mountains in Nevada are downright scary looking. Ain't got no lush green mountain meadows and peaceful streams with colorful flora and fauna trotting around gracefully. They got drab brown rattlesnakes looking for something to kill, sitting on drab brown and black lava mountains too hot to touch. Most of the lakes and rivers are too nasty to even have water in 'em. Just look at the sectional charts... those are actually color photographs.

Same as anywhere else, about ten times what they're worth! :D

I got mine cheap because it's old railroad land. In the 1800's the guvmit took all of the land along the proposed intercontinental railroad route, chopped it up into sections, then gave all of the odd numbered sections to the railroad companies so that they could use it to finance the railroad. They sold a bit of land, built the railroad, and hung onto the rest. About 20 years ago, the railroads dumped their land. To maximize their return, they sold the mineral rights separate from the surface rights. So, you can buy the land for cheap, but you don't own the minerals. And, you will always wonder if a mining company will come put an open pit mine in the middle of your place, but you will be too lazy to look up the law, so it will always be a nagging worry!

I won't tell you what I paid, but here are some sections of old railroad land in the general area for sale. The cheapest ones are going for about $100 an acre, however, all of these listings have pretty steep ground.

I occasionally see stuff down in the salt flats for sale for around $50 an acre. If land has water rights or mineral rights, then it can be quite astronomical.

=D>

Not too far off the mark. Your post was starting to resemble those Chuck Norris jokes.

People have a certain image in their mind when they think of Nevada. They don't like it when you tell them they are wrong.

Except for the inhabitants. With that their image is usually spot on #-o  I can say that because I'm related to some of them :|

"Nevada has not only a lot of real live mountains, but the real live weather to go with them. Heat-related micro-meteorology, wind-related orographic phenomena, more extreme density altitude thrown in during the summer than most anywhere."

- I am pretty sure that all of those are features of mountain flying anywhere you go. The claim to the more extreme DAs than most anywhere? well, I will let the folks from NM, CO, UT and Mexico, and even interior AK in the summer, take that up with you.

I like our mountains here, they are green and lush (for three or four months) except for the glaciers and volcanoes. They are easy to fly in, without turbulence, plenty of outs if you lose an engine, no tight canyons or fjords, and, most importantly they don't look scary. Plenty of non-drab flora and fauna. No rattlers, but we do have marten, and even though they do look cute, they, like the rattler, are just looking for something to kill. They can take off a grown man's pinky finger in one bite! Well maybe not clean off, but they will draw blood...most of the time.

Looks like ID will lose out to NV for mountain flying courses.

On the other side of the extreme DA coin, I was taking off from Fairbanks last month, elevation 439', at -20F, thinking that DA probably doesn't get too much better in a C-170 :D

Ended up going for $80 an acre. Not bad.

Denalipilot calculates out to -5186, feet below sea level, Density Altitude... Could name Fairbanks, "Mile Low"... ha ha

I actually took the above picture, because it shows where "Pertnear" is located. Last summer when I landed there, it would have calculated out at 13,946'... (10,500' and 75 degrees). It is located on that little hump, just straight above the rotating beacon on my tail.

Thanks for the good words on the photo. :-"

That was still pretty cheap property even by Nevada standards...

I'd never admit to it, as it was far too stupid to ever say I did it, but I remember some flights out of BRW and OTZ at 60 below. Both at sea level. Calculate that DA.....

Keep moving along folks, nothing to see here, and flying ain't worth a shit. Just keep moving on.
