Owyhee Resevoir

Anybody been to Owyhee? I am Lookin for a place to take my wife during spring break. I have to take my plane to southeast Idaho at the end of the break so I dont want to go too far out of the way. Anyother good places to go that might not be too cold to camp at during mid-March?

Re: Owyhee Resevoir

That would be a good choice in March for a place that is likely to be warm, never mind the great scenery. I've camped there several times in March and while it was cold up on the top it was warm down by the strip.

Be careful if you fly low down the canyon because I've met other aircraft flying the oposite direction at 30 feet off the water around a blind corner. A really fun flight is down Leslie Gulch just above the road but I doubt it could be done safely in anything but a PPC.

I took both these pics in March a couple years ago.

Picture taken about 3 miles south of Pelican Point airstrip, heading north. The airstrip is just out of the picture on the left of the reservoir.

A wide spot in Leslie Gulch where I had a few seconds to work the camera.

Wow, the strip looks rougher than I expected. I know for all you guys with big tires it ain't a big deal but I only got 6.00X6 on my little bird. I showed the pics to my wife and she wants to go so things just might work out.

600's are OK

Wheee...
I have flown into Owyhee a number of times with my Skylane on 600x6 main and 500x5 nose tires without any problem at all. Main thing is to hold up elevator and keep it moving to avoid throwing rocks with the prop. The tie down and camping area is at the north end of the strip on the east side. Also... be very careful of the biting bees in the "Hilton." Do remember to write a few words in the register.
