Pacer on Edo 1650
Information and discussion about seaplanes, float planes, and water operations.

Years ago my father and brother went in half & half on a PA-20/22 that came with a set of Edo 1650 floats. They sold the floats to another Pacer owner and just used wheels and skis. Common sense tells me that 1650s are too small for a plane that grosses at 1950 pounds. The Pacers that do get on the water seem to be on Edo 2000 floats, but I have seen a few on 1650s. I looked around on other sites (shortwing.org, etc.) and couldn't find much info about operating on 1650s. Does anybody have experience with this setup? I'm just curious how it would handle. Maybe they are a little hotrod off the water, if not completely legit. I don't know, this is just something that I've wondered about and look forward to hearing some input.
Looking at the TCDS the gross weights vary quite a bit depending on the model, from 1650 to 2000 pounds. And 1650s are not listed for the PA-22, just the PA-20.

They don't really come to mind when you hear "floatplane", but I think the PA-22-150 & 160 TriPacers were pretty popular seaplanes. I know a guy who used to fly seaplanes commercially & he had quite a bit of TriPacer float time-- he said the 150 & 160 Tripes performed pretty darn well.
You're right, the first thing I thought of when I read the title of this thread was that 1650's sounded kinda small for a Pacer, and the PA-20S TCDS lists both the Edo 1650 & 2000, the PA-22S lists only the 2000.

I would not want to run the 1650s on a pacer. It flew nice off the EDO 2000, and even better on full lotus 2150s, but the latter was not certified, and some in the govment kinda took offence to me having the plane on them. Seems they can loose their sense of humor pretty damn quick when you start putting experimental floats on a certified plane LOL. One of these days it is in the plans to try and get an STC for the full lotus on the pacer as well as a few other planes unmentioned planes they worked great on.

I got my float rating a few years back with Don at alaskafloats.com up in talkeetna.
He uses a 160 Pacer and Pretty sure edo 2000's. He knows alot about the pacer on floats and ski's.
Give him a call I'm sure he would have some insight.

Keep the Greasy side down!
Has anybody on here actually owned or flown a pacer on 1650's? I have found several rigged and ready, but still cant find anybody with any experience.
Thanks!

Doesn't the FAA require that the floats support at least 90% of the gross weight? (which would be 1755 if gross is 1950)

My first float plane was a 1950 PA-22 on EDO 1650’s. The 1650 is legal and T/C on the PA-20 with a gross of 1850. The PA-22’s and subsequent PA-22/20’s were never T/C for the 1650. They are T/C for 1800 but they’re kinda rare so most go with the 2000. My PA-20 was definitely under floated. I only flu it for a summer and then went to wheels for winter. Had to leave Alaska before I could get it back on floats, so I sold them. I still have the PA-20, should have it back in the air next spring.
