Painting Selkirk Interior

Has anyone had any luck painting their Selkirk fiberglass interior panels? I'm thinking about painting the worn Selkirk interior in my 180.

Its just fibreglass so I don't see any problem. The marine industry has some nice brush on polyurethanes that can be easy to use and give great results if you are not able to spray. As I am sure you know its all about prep (which I hate).

What's the best way to prep the fiberglass? I'll probably just use some sort of rattle can paint.

If it is not too beat up then just a good soap and water wash and some fine wet and dry is all I do. My Selkirk tunnel has some kind of textured finish on it which might be harder to prepare. Its black and staying just how it is:) I am from the "good from 20ft" school of thought. Id rather go flying.

I've never done it on the plane, but it's commonly done in the car world. Interior parts, plastics, door panels, dashes. Minimal prep just like described above. The SEM brand seems to be pretty popular in the car world.

Axalta makes a product called Master Tint Vinyl. It's a one part product, no mixing. Works great on fiberglass. Any color you want. They also make a prep cleaner for it. A real paint store might be able to load it into those one time use spray cans, don't know what they're called. Or you can spray with a cheap gun from Home Depot if you don't have one. Not sure about brushing. I've gotten it in as little as 4oz.

You might want to think twice about a quick rattle can job if you want the job to last. If you truly are going to use your airplane for its intended utility use, a higher quality paint product applied with spray equipment will last much longer than a lacquer or enamel product. The Sherwin Williams Aerospace interior coatings are quite robust. They are used on the interior of Boeing airliners due to their durability and resistance to wear and tear. I have found over the years that the quality products are worth every dime when its all said and done.-disclaimer -I have NO affiliation with S/W. I just use their products because they work well. :D

I would scuff the surfaces to be painted with 120 grit and give a thorough acetone wipe to it all prior to spraying.

Zolatone paint on composite surfaces works pretty well. It is highly textured and speckled, so it's easy to touch up without the painstaking color matching and surface blending effort.

Are you going to paint it in the airplane or remove it first?

I would remove all the pieces from the plane.
